Tick fever (bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis) is a serious and potentially fatal disease of cattle in Queensland. It is transmitted by the cattle tick (Rhipicephalus australis) and causes significant production losses and death in susceptible animals.
What Causes Tick Fever?
Tick fever is caused by three blood parasites: Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, and Anaplasma marginale.
Tick Fever Vaccination
The Queensland Government produces a live tick fever vaccine (Tick Fever Centre, Wacol). Vaccination is recommended for calves 3–9 months of age in tick-infested country and any naïve cattle being moved into a tick fever area. Vaccinate in cooler months (April–August). The vaccine requires strict cold chain management.
