Giant Rat's Tail Grass (GRT), part of the weedy Sporobolus grass group, is a Category 3 restricted invasive plant under Queensland's Biosecurity Act 2014. That means it must not be given away, sold, or released, and everyone has a general biosecurity obligation to minimise its risk. It also has a habit of quietly taking over pasture: dense infestations can cut carrying capacity and cattle performance dramatically, and a single plant can drop tens of thousands of seeds a year into a seed bank that stays viable for a decade.
A word before the methods. There are many ways to tackle rat's tail grass, and we are not suggesting that any one option should be used in every situation. What follows outlines the possible techniques for reducing and controlling GRT so you can put together the combination that fits your country, your infestation and your budget. Elimination is possible — but it comes at a trade-off of time, money and effort, and it's worth being honest about that from the start. It also pays to weigh up the positive and negative impacts of any chemical use on your property before you commit to a program.
The right method — or combination of methods — depends on how dense the infestation is, whether the country is arable, and what condition your competing pasture is in. This guide walks through the seven main control methods, how they work, when each one is the right (or wrong) call, and the density-based decision logic that ties them together, so you can build a program instead of guessing at a single treatment.
Start with density: how bad is the infestation?
Control effort should scale with how much GRT you're actually carrying:
- Isolated plants — chip out or spot-spray individual plants before they establish a seed bank.
- Scattered infestation — spot spraying combined with deliberately building up competitive pasture around survivors.
- Dense infestation — wick wiping or broadacre treatment per label, or on arable country, burning followed by cultivation and full pasture re-establishment.
As a rule of thumb, broadacre flupropanate treatment tends to become more cost-effective than spot spraying once you're carrying somewhere in the order of 1,000–2,000 plants per hectare. Below that, spot treatment usually wins on cost and keeps more of your existing pasture intact.
Whatever the density, one thing doesn't change: the end goal is a well-managed, competitive pasture, not just dead GRT. Every method below only works long-term when it's paired with re-establishing something that can out-compete regrowth and new seedlings.
Method 1: Flupropanate (spot or broadacre)
Flupropanate is the main selective herbicide option for GRT and the one most producers will lean on for meaningful infestations. We stock it in both forms: liquid 745 SL (GP Flupro, Genfarm, Surefire and Grow Choice, in sizes from 1 L up to 20 L) and GP granules (750 g shaker through to 15 kg), so there's a fit whether you're running a boom, a knapsack or no spray gear at all.
Rates:
- Broadacre liquid: 1.5–2.0 L/ha (use the higher rate for heavier infestations)
- Spot liquid: 200 mL per 100 L water
- Granules (broadcast or spot): check the current label before treating rather than relying on a fixed figure here.
Always check the current product label for your specific formulation before treating — rates and use patterns can vary by brand and label revision.
Why it works, and where it's tricky: Flupropanate is root-absorbed and needs soil moisture to work, so it's slow — expect 3 to 12 months to see plants die, not days. That slowness is actually useful: residual activity in the soil (roughly 6 months to 2 years) keeps killing germinating seedlings after the initial treatment, which is exactly what you need against a seed bank this persistent.
That residual capacity is the reason we rate flupropanate as a good long-term mode of treatment — but be aware it is heavily impacted by conditions and workmanship. Big rain events and flood can leach it past the root zone before it has done its job; drought can leave it sitting inactive waiting for soil moisture; and the accuracy of your application — hitting the target plants, at the right dose rate — makes as much difference as the chemical itself. Patience is part of the deal: judge the result over seasons, not weeks. As with any chemical on your country, weigh the positives (long residual seedling kill, selectivity in established pasture) against the negatives (withholding periods, pasture damage at excessive rates, variable results on sandy or flooded ground) before committing.
The dose window is narrow. Too little and GRT survives; too much and you can hammer your competing pasture along with it, leaving bare ground that the seed bank promptly reclaims. Field observation and regional trial history (not a current product-label tolerance rating) suggest some desirable pasture species handle flupropanate reasonably well at around 2 L/ha — buffel, Rhodes, kikuyu, paspalum, setaria, Queensland bluegrass and kangaroo grass among them (carpet grass will brown off but typically recovers within 12–18 months). Wallaby grass, weeping grass and young, freshly sown pasture are more susceptible and can be knocked around by the same treatment. Treat this as field-observation context rather than a label-authorised tolerance claim, and check the current product label for any formally listed tolerant/susceptible species before relying on it.
Liquid generally outperforms granules on mortality — trial results have shown liquid achieving 97%+ mortality against roughly 65%+ for granules in comparable conditions — but granules have a place where spray gear can't get in, on rough terrain, since they just need rain to activate rather than a boom or knapsack. The trade-off is that granules are entirely dependent on getting that activating rainfall.
On sandy soils, flupropanate can leach past the root zone before it's had a chance to work, which is a documented cause of control failures. If you're re-seeding after treatment, allow for a proper leaching rain event first so you're not sowing into active herbicide — the current product label or APVMA permit is the authoritative source for any specific waiting period before re-seeding, so check it directly.
Withholding periods (check the current label, but as a general guide): spot-treated country — minimum 14 days before grazing; broadacre-treated country — 4 months before grazing; 14 days on clean feed before slaughter; no lactating dairy stock on treated country.
Why control sometimes fails: the seed bank outlasts a single treatment (up to 85,000 seeds/m² per year, around 90% viable, persisting up to a decade), there's no follow-up treatment, competing pasture gets killed off alongside the GRT, or the country is sandy and leaching takes the chemical out of reach. Flupropanate/2,2-DPA resistance has been confirmed in serrated tussock in Victoria and NSW, and in giant Parramatta grass — a weedy Sporobolus species closely related to GRT — in the Grafton district of northern NSW. Resistance is documented, not just theoretical: rotate methods rather than leaning on chemistry alone.
Method 2: Burning
Burning alone does not kill established GRT tussocks — trial mortality from fire alone has been recorded at effectively zero, and burning can actually promote seeding by clearing competition and opening up bare ground. Used in isolation, burning is more likely to make an infestation worse than better.
Burning does have legitimate supporting roles:
- Removing rank, overgrown material before a follow-up treatment so herbicide or grazing can actually reach the plant
- Killing seed in the surface layer: GRT seed is killed by exposure to at least 125°C for 15 or more seconds (a lab-established heat threshold), and separately, pasture fires in the field have been recorded killing around 50% of the surface seed bank — two distinct findings, not one combined measurement
- Killing droughted seedlings under about 15 cm tall, when there's enough fuel load (around 4 t/ha)
- On dense arable infestations, burning ahead of cultivation as one step in a broader renovation program
The key failure mode: burning without a follow-up spray or deliberate competition-building step just clears the way for mass germination into bare ground. And if you're planning to follow up with flupropanate, don't burn right before the activating rain — it undermines the herbicide's effectiveness.
Method 3: Deep ripping / cultivation
GRT seedlings only emerge from the top 20 mm of soil. That has a practical consequence: deep cultivation doesn't destroy seed, it buries it — and a later pass of tillage can bring that same viable seed back to the surface.
Cultivation is really a tool for dense infestations on arable country, used as one stage in a full renovation:
- Glyphosate spray-out to knock down the existing stand
- Roughly a 3-year cropping phase (forage sorghum and similar) to exhaust the seed bank and generate income while doing it
- Replant pasture using minimum tillage, at up to triple the normal seeding rate, to get fast, thick competitive cover established
On marginal or sloping country, reduced or minimum tillage is the better call regardless of GRT — erosion risk becomes the limiting factor, not weed control. Full cultivation is only the right tool where the ground is genuinely arable and the infestation is dense enough to justify a multi-year renovation.
Method 4: Heavy grazing
Grazing management cuts both ways with GRT, and it's worth being clear-eyed about which side you're on.
Overgrazing is one of the classic drivers of GRT dominance in the first place — it weakens the pasture species that would otherwise compete with GRT, opening the door for it to take over. That's a vicious cycle: more GRT, less good pasture, more overgrazing pressure on what's left.
Used tactically, though, heavy grazing or slashing of young GRT regrowth — while it's still palatable, before it matures — can reduce plant size and cut down seed production. This is a deliberate, short-term tactic, not a grazing philosophy.
GRT also imposes real production costs once it's established: increased tooth wear and loosening in stock, cattle taking up to 12 months longer to reach target weight, effective stocking rates halved, and production losses of up to 80% recorded in dense stands.
The practical takeaway: moderate, planned stocking with pasture spelling — giving desirable species the chance to seed and thicken up — protects against GRT taking hold. Heavy grazing is a targeted tool for knocking back young regrowth, not a long-term control strategy on its own.
Method 5: Out-competing with better pasture
This is the method that makes every other method actually last. In a vigorous, well-managed pasture, GRT seedlings stay small and, in practice, won't get to seeding size for years. Strong competition is what turns a one-off treatment into lasting control.
Signal grass is a strong competitive option here, and we keep Barenbrug signal grass seed in stock in depth for this kind of program. In the Gladstone Regional Council / Biosecurity Queensland GRT project, integrated treatments combining flupropanate, signal-grass seed, fertiliser and follow-up herbicide changed pasture from about 90% GRT to more than 68% signal grass within four years at the trial site. The report separately lists signal grass among pasture species tolerant of flupropanate when applied according to label instructions. These were trial findings from one site and soil type, so results can vary with soil, rainfall, pasture species and management; check the current product label before relying on herbicide tolerance in your own program.
For sowing new competitive pasture, Mekong Briz-antha (Brachiaria brizantha, from DLF Seeds) is another option to consider: a vigorous tropical brachiaria bred for productivity and persistence, suited to a wide range of soils including acid country. DLF's own product page positions Mekong for the humid-to-sub-humid tropics on 1,500–3,500 mm average annual rainfall, though it states the variety will also grow in more arid regions down to about 500 mm. Gympie district rainfall (around 1,100 mm) sits below DLF's primary suited range, so Mekong here is better framed as a lower-rainfall-tolerant option than as a perfect climate match. One further honest caveat: unlike signal grass, there's no trial or label data on Mekong's tolerance to flupropanate, so sequence it sensibly — establish Mekong after residual herbicide has had its leaching rain, or keep chemical follow-up to spot and wiper work around it rather than blanket treatment over it.
Species that have performed well against GRT in field observations also include Katambora Rhodes grass and Bisset creeping bluegrass, along with legumes like Wynn cassia. Runner or stoloniferous grass types generally out-compete GRT more effectively than tussock-forming types.
Getting competition established properly means:
- Fertility matched to the job — nitrogen to drive grass growth, phosphorus to support legumes, both a starter dose and ongoing maintenance fertiliser
- Oversowing at 2–3 times the normal seeding rate (triple rate after a cropping phase, to get fast canopy closure)
- Combining with spot spraying of any survivors rather than relying on competition alone
Realistically, a second flupropanate pass is often needed 2–3 years after the first, even with good pasture establishment — competition buys you time and reduces the scale of the problem, but it's rarely a complete substitute for follow-up chemical control.
Method 6: Glyphosate (spot treatment)
Glyphosate is fast — expect visible brownout within 1–2 weeks — and cheap. Under the current APVMA permit (PER9792), glyphosate's withholding period is not required when used as directed, unlike flupropanate's grazing and slaughter withholding periods. The trade-off is that glyphosate is completely non-selective: anything green in the treated area dies, which leaves bare ground open to reinvasion from the very seed bank you're trying to exhaust. Broadacre glyphosate use has been assessed as unsuitable for dense infestations because of the collateral damage to surrounding pasture and native species.
Under PER9792 Version 10 (current to 31 December 2030), spot-spray rates for weedy Sporobolus species are concentration-specific: glyphosate 360 g/L at 1 L per 100 L water, 450 g/L at 800 mL per 100 L water, and 540 g/L at 660 mL per 100 L water. Always confirm the concentration on your product's label and use the matching permit rate rather than a generic figure. A common technique is to trickle the mix into the centre of the tussock rather than blanket-spraying the whole plant, which helps spare surrounding pasture.
Glyphosate's real strength is speed and simplicity for isolated plants or scattered outliers, where you want a quick kill and aren't worried about collateral damage to a small patch of bare ground. It's the wrong tool for dense stands sitting in otherwise good pasture — that's flupropanate or wick wiping territory.
An APVMA permit (PER9792, current to 31 December 2030) covers glyphosate and flupropanate use on weedy Sporobolus species including in Queensland — check the permit's specific conditions before relying on it, as permit terms can be narrower than a standard label.
Method 7: Wick wiping
Wick wiping exploits height difference: it applies concentrated herbicide by direct contact to whatever is taller than the surrounding pasture, so it only touches the GRT, not the shorter grass underneath.
To work, you need a genuine height differential — at least 30 cm between GRT and pasture — which usually means grazing the paddock hard beforehand to knock the pasture down while leaving GRT standing proud. Under PER9792 Version 10, wiper suppression mix rates for weedy Sporobolus species are also concentration-specific: glyphosate 360 g/L at 3.3 L per 10 L water, 450 g/L at 2.6 L per 10 L water, and 540 g/L at 2.2 L per 10 L water. Confirm the concentration on your product's label and use the matching permit rate. Set the wiper roughly 30 cm above the pasture canopy, run at about 5 km/h, in a double pass in opposite directions to catch what the first pass missed.
One wipe is not a program — each pass typically kills more than half of what it contacts, which sounds decent until you realise that means a meaningful fraction survives every single time. A proper wick-wiping program means three or more passes over about 18 months (a practical rhythm some producers use is roughly Christmas, Easter, Christmas), followed by spot-spraying whatever survives.
Wick wiping's blind spot is anything below the height differential: seedlings and low-growing plants get missed entirely, and it does nothing for the seed bank. It's a maintenance and knock-down tool for dense stands with good height separation, not a stand-alone or one-pass solution.
Hygiene and containment: the step every method depends on
None of the above matters much if you keep reintroducing seed. GRT spreads through:
- Stock — cattle grazing seeding GRT can pass up to 30,000 seeds a day in dung. Quarantining stock on clean feed for 5–7 days before moving them to clean country breaks this pathway.
- Machinery, especially slashers — slashing standing GRT both spreads seed on the machine and can promote further seeding. Clean-down (scrape, air blast, pressure wash) before moving equipment between paddocks or properties matters more than it sounds.
- Hay cut from or contaminated by GRT-infested country
- Water flows, carrying seed downstream during rain events
Practical containment measures: 10–20 m buffer strips along boundaries, roads and waterways, and a stockproof fence paired with a 10 m clean buffer, which has been shown to hold back roughly 99% of spread from an infested area.
Building a program, not picking one method
The methods above aren't really alternatives to each other — they're pieces of a program that changes shape depending on density and country type:
- Isolated plants: chip or spot-spray on sight, before they seed
- Scattered infestation: spot spray with flupropanate or glyphosate, paired with active pasture improvement to build competition
- Dense infestation on grazing country: wick wiping program (3+ passes over ~18 months) or broadacre flupropanate, followed by pasture renovation and ongoing spot treatment of survivors
- Dense infestation on arable country: burn to clear rank material, cultivate, crop for around 3 years to exhaust the seed bank, then re-establish pasture at high seeding rates with minimum tillage
Whichever path fits your situation, hygiene and containment run underneath all of it, and a second treatment pass 2–3 years after the first should be budgeted for from the start rather than treated as a sign the first round failed.
