Cattle tick (Rhipicephalus microplus) is one of the most economically significant parasites affecting Queensland cattle producers. With resistance to multiple chemical classes now widespread, a well-designed tick control program is essential.
The Queensland Tick Line
Queensland is divided by the Tick Line — a legislated boundary separating tick-infested from tick-free areas. Moving cattle across the Tick Line without inspection and treatment is prohibited. The Wide Bay and Gympie region is generally in the tick-infested zone.
Understanding Tick Resistance
Resistance to all major chemical classes has been confirmed in Queensland tick populations. The key principle: rotate chemical classes each treatment cycle and never rely on a single class long-term.
Tick Development Inhibitors
Fluazuron (Acatak, Tickpro, Oztik) is a tick development inhibitor that prevents tick larvae from completing their life cycle. It does not kill adult ticks but provides extended residual protection. Refer to the current registered product label for withholding periods and re-treatment intervals.
