Urea and NPN Poisoning in Cattle — Causes, Symptoms and Prevention

Urea and other non-protein nitrogen (NPN) sources are some of the most cost-effective ways to feed cattle through a Queensland dry season — and one of the few supplements that can kill stock quickly when they go in wrong. This guide covers why urea poisoning happens, the situations that cause it, and the practical habits that prevent it.

Why do cattle get urea poisoning?

Rumen microbes convert urea into ammonia, which well-adapted microbes then use to build protein. Poisoning happens when ammonia is released faster than the rumen microbes and the liver can process it — the excess ammonia enters the bloodstream, and the result can be fatal. It is a speed problem, not just a quantity problem: the same amount of urea that a properly adapted beast handles every day can kill an unadapted or gorging animal.

What are the signs of urea poisoning?

Signs come on fast — often within about 20 to 60 minutes of a toxic intake: muscle tremors, heavy salivation, rapid breathing, abdominal pain and bloat, staggering, and going down. In severe cases, death can follow within about two hours. Because it moves that quickly, prevention is worth far more than response — but if you suspect urea poisoning, get off the phone to anyone except your vet: it is an emergency, and it's worth talking to your vet in advance about what first aid to keep on hand where urea supplements are fed.

What actually causes it? The common situations

Nearly every case traces back to one of a handful of situations:

  • Hungry cattle gorging. Hungry cattle are likely to gorge a lick while having too few adapted microbes to process the ammonia. Never introduce urea supplements to hungry stock — let them fill up on pasture or hay first.
  • No adaptation period. Rumen microbes need time to build up. Sudden access to a full-strength urea supplement, or a long gap followed by a return to it, catches the rumen unprepared.
  • Rain and dew on blocks and loose licks. Urea is highly soluble. Rainwater pooled in the licked-out well of a block becomes a concentrated urea solution — a few mouthfuls of that puddle can deliver a toxic dose in minutes. Loose licks that get wet develop the same problem.
  • Uneven mixing. Home-mixed licks with poorly distributed urea create hot spots — one animal's share of the mix carries far more urea than intended.

How do you feed urea safely?

Queensland extension guidance (FutureBeef) comes down to a short list of habits:

  • Introduce gradually. Build the urea content of the supplement up over a period of weeks, so the rumen population adapts.
  • Keep the supply consistent. Don't let cattle go more than 2–3 days without the supplement — adaptation fades, and the return becomes a fresh introduction.
  • Keep feed stations covered. Weather protection over blocks and lick troughs is the cheapest insurance there is.
  • Drain after rain. Tip blocks onto their side after rain so water can't pool in the licked-out wells, and use open-ended troughs or troughs with drainage slits for loose licks.
  • Control intake. Salt and dicalcium phosphate in loose licks regulate how fast cattle consume them — follow the product or recipe directions rather than improvising the ratios.
  • Feed hungry cattle first. Fill them up before they meet the lick.

Do manufactured blocks carry the same risk?

Manufactured urea blocks are formulated to limit intake speed, which makes them safer than home mixes — but they are not risk-proof. The wet-weather puddle risk applies to any block with urea in it, and every product carries its own directions for introduction, positioning and stock class. The label on the actual product governs: some blocks are not suitable for sheep or horses, and NPN percentages differ widely between products. Check the label of the block in front of you, not the one you bought last year.
