If you're building or repairing cattle yards, the first decision is simple: are you buying raw cattle rail and fittings to build a fixed system, or a prefabricated portable panel that pins into a portable-yard setup? TGRM stocks both. Here's how to choose.
1. Which cattle rail — 2.0 mm or 2.5 mm wall?
TGRM stocks 115 × 42 mm oval cattle rail in 6.1 metre lengths, in two wall thicknesses: 2.0 mm and 2.5 mm.
As a general guide from our counter:
2.0 mm is the standard choice. It's lighter, cheaper, easier to handle and drill, and suits most yard rails and fence lines where the rail spans between posts and takes normal stock pressure. It also matches the no-weld BOSAG joiners, which are made for a 1.8–2.0 mm wall.
2.5 mm is the heavy-duty choice. The thicker wall gives a stiffer, tougher rail that takes more punishment before it dents or bends. Use it in the high-pressure spots — forcing yards, races, crush approaches, loading ramps and gateways — anywhere big cattle hit the rail hard and often. It's also the pick where you're welding the structure or simply want it to outlast everything. It costs more per length and is heavier to work with.
Rule of thumb: 2.0 mm for the yards generally, 2.5 mm where the cattle push. This is a guide only — the right choice for a particular structure depends on your design, and structural or span decisions belong with your designer or engineer.
2. A note on rail quality — and getting other sizes
Not all cattle rail is equal. The cheap end of the market is imported rail with inconsistent wall thickness and thin galvanising — which is exactly where a rail dents, sags or rusts early. TGRM's 115 × 42 rail comes through an Australian-owned Queensland supplier, so the 2.0 mm rail measures what it says, the galvanising is up to the job, and the same profile is available next year when you extend the yards.
The two rails above are what we keep on the floor, but the supply range behind them covers virtually all steel sizes and options — pipe, RHS, different rail profiles and wall thicknesses. If your job needs a size we don't have racked, we can get it in. Just ask.
3. Screw-on or welded?
Both methods build a strong yard — the choice comes down to your gear, your site and how permanent the job is.
Screw-on fittings are the pick when: you don't have a welder or don't weld confidently; the site has no power and you're working off the ute with a battery drill; you're repairing or extending existing yards and want the job done the same day; you're fixing rail to timber posts; or you may want to reconfigure later — screwed joints can be undone, welds can't. Screw-on is how most farm repairs and owner-built yards go together, and there's no galvanising damage because you're not burning the coating.
Welding is the pick when: you're building a new set of yards from scratch and want maximum rigidity in the high-pressure areas — forcing yard, race, crush mount, loading ramp; you're using the 2.5 mm heavy-wall rail (the no-weld internal joiner is made for 1.8–2.0 mm wall, so heavy rail joins are welded); or you want a fully sealed permanent structure. Remember welding burns the galvanising at the joint — treat every weld with cold-gal so rust doesn't start at your strongest point.
Rule of thumb: screw-on for repairs, extensions and no-power sites; weld the new build's pressure points — and always weld the 2.5 mm rail joins. Guide only; your design governs.
4. Match the fitting to the rail
Fittings are made for a specific rail profile and wall thickness — check the fitting matches your rail before ordering. For the 115 × 42 range TGRM stocks:
Straight joiner — BOSAG CRJ115X42. A ribbed internal joiner that joins two rails end-to-end without welding. Made for 1.8–2.0 mm wall rail — it is not the joiner for the 2.5 mm rail; weld those joins instead.
End joiner with plate — BOSAG CRJ115X42E. For finishing a rail into a post: the plate welds or Tek-screws to the post and the rail fits the joiner.
End cap — BOSAG CRC115X42. Caps the open end of a rail for a clean, safe finish — cheap insurance against sharp edges and water sitting in the rail.
Saddle — BOSAG CRS115X42. For fixing rail across the face of a post — the everyday way to mount rails on a fence line or yard wall.
No-weld end bracket — Rotech RailTight CRER11542. The pick if you don't want to weld at all: the bracket screws to a steel or timber post and the rail slides over it. Sold as a pair.
5. Raw rail or a portable panel?
Buy raw rail and fittings when you're building or repairing a fixed yard — you cut, join and mount everything to suit your layout.
Buy a portable panel or gate when you want a ready-made section that pins into a portable-yard system — no cutting or welding, and you can move the yard later. 6. Narrowing it down — a 60-second checklist
Building fixed yards: (1) pick your wall thickness — 2.0 mm standard, 2.5 mm where the cattle push; (2) decide screw-on or welded for each part of the job; (3) count your joins and ends and pick the fitting for each; (4) confirm each fitting suits your rail wall.
Adding to a portable yard: match the panel height, rail size and pin/connection style to your existing panels.
