Callide, Katambora, Mariner, Reclaimer and Endura are all Rhodes grass, but that does not make every published number directly comparable. The safest way to choose between them is to compare the adaptation attributes that share a common basis — such as manufacturer-stated rainfall range, pH range, ploidy and growth habit — while treating sowing rates, yield claims and erosion-control statements in the context in which each supplier published them.
There is no defensible evidence here for a universal "best Rhodes grass" ranking. The useful decision is: which published attributes best match the site, and which differences are real rather than artifacts of different coating systems, label categories or trial methods?
1. What can actually be compared?
The following attributes can be compared with reasonable care because they are published on a broadly common basis.
- Ploidy: tetraploid.
- Manufacturer-stated minimum rainfall: 700 mm+.
- Published soil pH range: 5.0–8.0.
- Growth habit: stoloniferous.
- Salt tolerance: Barenbrug describes it as quite salt tolerant, while noting it is not as salt tolerant as Katambora.
- Ploidy: tetraploid.
- Manufacturer-stated minimum rainfall: 650 mm.
- Published soil pH range: 5.5–8.0.
- Growth habit: strongly stoloniferous and tufted.
- Salt tolerance: described qualitatively through its salt-management mechanism rather than with a published dS/m threshold.
- Ploidy: diploid.
- Manufacturer-stated minimum rainfall: 500 mm+.
- Published soil pH range: 5.0–8.0.
- Growth habit: stoloniferous.
- Salt tolerance: Barenbrug states productivity can remain between 4 and 10 dS/m and survival can occur up to 20 dS/m in certain situations.
- Ploidy: diploid. Barenbrug Australia identifies Katambora as a diploid variety.
- Manufacturer-stated minimum rainfall: 500 mm unless irrigated on the verified DLF page.
- Published soil pH range: 5–7 on the verified DLF page.
- Growth habit: perennial, with some supplier guidance noting it can behave as an annual in cold-winter or long-dry environments.
- Salt tolerance: DLF describes it as very tolerant of high soil sodium levels.
- Ploidy: diploid.
- Manufacturer-stated minimum rainfall: 600 mm+ in the verified fact sheet.
- Published soil pH range: not stated in the verified source set.
- Growth habit: highly stoloniferous and erect.
- Salt tolerance: reseller/manufacturer-derived material states productivity in 4–10 dS/m conditions and survival up to 20 dS/m, while also warning that establishment may be difficult where surface salt is present.
These values are useful as adaptation signals. They should not be turned into a scorecard because the publishers have not run one common five-variety trial under the same conditions.
2. What planting rate should I use, and why aren't the label rates directly comparable?
Government extension guidance shows that coating can materially change the kilograms of product required per hectare. FutureBeef advises that coated seed rates should be at least tripled relative to uncoated seed in the context it discusses. NSW DPI also explains the principle using coating-to-seed ratios: a 2:1 coating-to-seed ratio can require about three times the product weight, while a 4:1 ratio can require about five times the product weight, and Pure Live Seed is the preferred comparable basis.
As a general guide, TGRM's Rhodes grass planting rates for coated seed are:
- Marginal dryland: 4–6 kg/ha
- General dryland planting: 5–8 kg/ha
- Ideal dryland: 8–12 kg/ha
- Irrigated: 15–25 kg/ha
All planting rates on tgrm.com.au are a guide only. Suppliers use different coating systems and different label-rate categories, so the same kg/ha figure does not always mean the same amount of seed in the ground, and a lower price per kilogram does not automatically mean a lower cost to establish a hectare. Use the sowing rate stated on the label of the exact product and coating supplied. If you are trying to compare establishment cost between brands, first confirm the coating-to-seed ratio or PLS basis from the supplier.
3. Katambora needs an extra check before ordering
TGRM's current Katambora listing can be supplied as DLF or Barenbrug. That matters because the two suppliers use different coating systems and different label-rate schemes.
The practical instruction is simple: check which supplier's bag you are actually receiving, then use that supplier's current label or technical guidance. Do not combine the rate from one supplier with the coating system or price from the other.
This is also why the comparison above uses adaptation attributes such as rainfall and pH rather than pretending the two Katambora supply chains are identical in every commercial detail.
Reclaimer also needs an explicit disclosure before ordering. Across the verified IH Seeds, Selected Seeds and AusWest source material, the breeder/owner and coating type are not published clearly enough to establish them. Do not assume Reclaimer's coating is equivalent to Callide, Mariner, Endura or Katambora simply because each may be sold as coated seed. Use the exact supplied product's current label or supplier guidance.
4. What do the suppliers say about erosion and reclamation?
The suppliers make useful statements, but they are different types of claims and should not be ranked as though they came from one trial.
Callide — Barenbrug states that it develops good ground cover and can effectively control erosion once established, with regular defoliation needed to maintain cover.
Mariner — Barenbrug positions Mariner for land reclamation and erosion control.
Endura — Barenbrug positions Endura for land reclamation, amenity, erosion control and mine rehabilitation.
Katambora — DLF notes that in cold-winter or long-dry regions it can act as an annual and be used for erosion control.
Reclaimer — reseller/manufacturer-derived material describes aggressive stolon production that binds soil and provides erosion-control benefits.
Those statements can help identify possible applications, but they do not establish a head-to-head erosion-control ranking. 5. What about performance and yield claims?
The available performance evidence is not like-for-like.
Reclaimer has a published claim of up to 20% more dry-matter production than Katambora from a trial associated with Lowmead, Queensland, planted in October 2010, but the public material does not provide enough rainfall, soil, replication and management detail to turn that result into a universal performance claim.
Mariner is promoted with comparative persistence and yield language, but the verified product page does not provide the underlying head-to-head data.
Callide publishes carrying-capacity and live-weight-gain information, which is a different outcome measure again. Katambora publishes a broad dry-matter range that explicitly depends on soil fertility, environment and management. Endura's reviewed material relies on positioning and testimonials rather than a common comparative trial.
So there is no defensible five-variety performance table from the current evidence. TGRM does not convert those unlike claims into a ranking.
6. How should salt tolerance be read?
Salt tolerance is partly comparable, but not perfectly.
Endura and Reclaimer have published figures on the same dS/m scale. Callide, Katambora and Mariner are described qualitatively. It is therefore reasonable to reproduce each supplier's published description, but not to award an overall "best for salt" score across all five.
Where salinity is a major constraint, site-specific agronomic advice and soil testing are more useful than relying on a retailer comparison alone.
7. Which variety is right for my site?
Use the comparison as a filter rather than a ranking.
Start with the constraints you know: rainfall or irrigation, soil pH, salinity, drainage, expected grazing or cutting management, and the role the grass needs to perform. Then remove varieties whose published adaptation information clearly does not fit.
After that, confirm the exact supplier and coating being offered, then use that product's current label or technical sheet for establishment rate and management instructions.
If two or more options still fit, the decision may come down to current availability, pack size, supplier preference, local experience and how the published attributes align with the property or project. Those are legitimate commercial considerations, but they are not proof that one cultivar is agronomically superior in every setting.
8. What should I check before ordering?
Confirm:
- the exact cultivar;
- the supplier/manufacturer on the bag;
- whether the seed is coated and which coating system is used;
- the current label sowing rate for that supplied product;
- whether any PLS or coating-to-seed information is available;
- the site's rainfall/irrigation, pH and salinity constraints; and
- current TGRM stock, pack size and price.
TGRM's commercial details can change, so current stock and price should be taken from the live product listing or confirmed at the time of ordering rather than hard-coded into an evergreen comparison.
9. What this comparison does not claim
This resource does not claim that one Rhodes variety is universally best. It does not treat unlike sowing-rate categories as equivalent, does not calculate cross-brand cost per hectare without coating/PLS data, does not rank yield from incompatible evidence, and does not turn manufacturer erosion statements into a head-to-head engineering result.
Its purpose is narrower and more useful: show the buyer what can be compared, explain what cannot, preserve the important unknowns, and make the next buying decision more defensible.
