There is no single seed that is right for every batter slope. The practical choice depends on whether you need temporary cover or permanent vegetation, the slope and erosion risk, soil and drainage, season, available water, and how the site can be prepared and maintained. On steep, unstable or engineered batters, seed selection is only one part of the stabilisation method and specialist revegetation or erosion-control design may be needed.
1. Do I want temporary cover or permanent vegetation?
Temporary cover is about protecting disturbed soil while the site is being stabilised or while permanent vegetation establishes. Permanent vegetation has a different job: it needs to persist under the site's soil, moisture and management conditions.
Queensland TMR specifications make this distinction explicit. MRTS52 treats prompt stabilisation of disturbed areas as an erosion-control requirement and points to MRTS16 for permanent revegetation, including cover crop within permanent seed mixes. That is useful project context for private batters as well, even though it is written for road projects.
2. How steep and erosion-prone is the batter?
Slope changes establishment risk. Queensland TMR's MRTS16 distinguishes slopes steeper than 1V:4H from slopes at or flatter than 1V:4H, and specifies bonded-fibre-matrix hydromulch as a method for gradients up to about 1:2. It does not prescribe one seed or one establishment method purely because a batter crosses the 1V:4H line.
Treat those gradients as engineering and revegetation context. If the batter is very steep, unstable, dispersive, affected by concentrated drainage, or part of engineered civil works, get project-specific advice before treating seed as the whole solution.
3. What site conditions should I check before choosing seed?
Before choosing a product, establish the conditions the vegetation actually has to survive:
- soil type, fertility and pH;
- drainage and salinity constraints;
- expected rainfall and whether establishment irrigation is available;
- planting season and soil temperature;
- access for seedbed preparation, watering and follow-up;
- whether the target is short-term cover or a persistent warm-season stand.
Regional pasture guidance helps with matching species to conditions; batter revegetation is normally sown heavier than a pasture, so use revegetation figures for batter work.
4. How do rye, millet and Couch fit into a temporary-cover pathway?
The original TGRM enquiry named rye, oats and couch. Those terms are useful because they highlight the difference between short-term cover and permanent warm-season vegetation rather than pointing to one universal mix.
For Queensland TMR permanent-revegetation context, MRTS16 includes a seasonal cover-crop component: 50% annual rye plus 50% annual millet from April to August, or annual millet from September to March, at a specified 10 kg/ha.

This is why the first decision is the vegetation job: a temporary cover-crop pathway and a permanent Couch/Rhodes pathway solve different problems and are often used together in a specified revegetation mix.

5. Which permanent grasses does TGRM stock, and what do the makers actually claim?
TGRM's current range includes several Rhodes grass cultivars. Manufacturer information gives useful application clues without amounting to a universal ranking.
Callide Rhodes grass — Barenbrug states that established Callide can effectively control erosion, with management needed to maintain cover.
Mariner Rhodes grass — Barenbrug describes Mariner for applications including land reclamation and erosion control.
Endura Rhodes grass — Barenbrug describes Endura for land reclamation, amenity, erosion control and mine rehabilitation. Availability must be checked because stock changes.
Katambora Rhodes grass — TGRM's current listing can be supplied as DLF or Barenbrug. Check the bag or current product details because supplier and coating system can affect the sowing-rate information that applies.
Reclaimer Rhodes grass — a highly stoloniferous variety with a published salt-tolerance range; its published yield trial is a yield result rather than an erosion-control result.

6. Why can't I compare coated-seed rates on the bag?
MRTS16's minimum seed application rates are based on seed purity of 95% and germination/viability of 80%. Coated seed sold by total product weight contains coating as well as seed, so a kg/ha figure for one product is not automatically the same amount of seed as the same figure for another product.
FutureBeef advises that coated seed rates should be at least tripled relative to uncoated seed in the context it discusses. NSW DPI similarly explains that a 2:1 coating-to-seed ratio can require about three times the product weight and a 4:1 ratio about five times, with Pure Live Seed as the more comparable basis. Use the label rate for the exact product supplied.
7. How much seed do I need for my area? (guide only)
Area in hectares = area in square metres ÷ 10,000. Seed quantity = area in hectares × sowing rate in kg/ha.
Worked guide for the original enquiry — 4,554 m² (0.4554 ha), using the MRTS16 specification rates as the example basis:
- Green Couch, hulled — 10 kg/ha → about 4.6 kg
- Green Couch, unhulled — 10 kg/ha → about 4.6 kg
- Mix of three additional perennial grasses (e.g. Rhodes cultivars) — 15 kg/ha → about 6.8 kg
- Seasonal cover crop (rye/millet) — 10 kg/ha → about 4.6 kg
As a general guide, TGRM's Rhodes grass planting rates for coated seed are marginal dryland 4–6 kg/ha, general dryland 5–8 kg/ha, ideal dryland 8–12 kg/ha and irrigated 15–25 kg/ha; on the same 0.4554 ha that is roughly 2.3–3.6 kg for a general dryland pasture planting, and more for a batter, where revegetation specifications sit higher.
All planting rates and quantities on tgrm.com.au are a guide only. MRTS16 figures assume 95% purity and 80% germination; coated products vary. Use the label of the exact product supplied, and round up to whole packs.
8. When is seed alone not enough?
Queensland TMR erosion-control guidance includes measures such as soil treatment, batter stabilisation, geofabric, hydromulching and early revegetation. The right establishment method depends on the site and project risk.
Preparation, seed-to-soil contact, moisture during establishment and protection from erosion can matter as much as cultivar choice. On difficult batters, erosion-control matting, hydromulch or another stabilisation system may be more appropriate than broadcasting seed alone.
9. When should I get engineering or revegetation advice?
Get project-specific engineering, erosion-control or revegetation advice where there are unstable or dispersive soils, concentrated drainage, very steep slopes, civil specification requirements, safety consequences, or a high cost of establishment failure.

10. What should I confirm before ordering?
Confirm the area, intended vegetation outcome, slope/site constraints, establishment method and the exact seed form being supplied. Then check the current product label for the rate that applies to that product.
