Serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma) is a declared Class 2 pest in Queensland and one of the most economically damaging weeds in Australian pastoral country. Early detection and the right herbicide program are critical.
Why Serrated Tussock is a Problem
Serrated tussock spreads rapidly by wind-dispersed seeds and quickly dominates pastures, reducing carrying capacity by up to 80%. Stock will not graze it, and it provides minimal ground cover against erosion.
Best Herbicides for Serrated Tussock
Flupropanate (Taskforce, Tussock Terminator) is the gold standard for serrated tussock control in Queensland. It is soil-active, moves through the root system, and provides long-residual control. Apply in late winter to early spring before flowering — always refer to the product label for current registered rates and application instructions. Note that flupropanate is not classified as a Dangerous Good for road transport and can be shipped Australia-wide via Australia Post.
Glyphosate can be used for spot spraying actively growing plants but provides no residual control. Best used in a follow-up program after flupropanate.
Haloxyfop is effective on young tussock plants but less so on established clumps.
Application Tips
- Apply flupropanate in late winter before flowering to prevent seed set
- Use a boom spray for broadscale treatment, spot spray for follow-up
- Allow 12 months between flupropanate application and resowing pasture
- Always read the label and check WHP and ESI requirements before withholding livestock
