Important — read this first. Serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma) is a prohibited invasive plant in Queensland under the Biosecurity Act 2014, and it has not been found established in Queensland. If you think you've found serrated tussock in Queensland

Report it straight away using any one of these:

Every Queensland landholder also has a general biosecurity obligation to take reasonable steps to limit the spread of invasive plants. For a weed that isn't established here yet, early reporting is the single most valuable thing you can do.

Are you sure it's serrated tussock — or is it giant rat's tail?

Because serrated tussock isn't established in Queensland, the tough tussocky grass most Queensland landholders are actually fighting is giant rat's tail grass (GRT, Sporobolus spp.) — a very different, widely established weed that is controlled with flupropanate. It's easy to lump problem tussock grasses together, so before you reach for a herbicide, confirm which grass you actually have. How serrated tussock is managed where it does occur

In the southern states where serrated tussock is established (parts of NSW, Victoria and Tasmania), flupropanate and glyphosate are the mainstays, always under the current registered label and local control programs. In Queensland, any incursion is managed by Biosecurity Queensland with the aim of eradication — which is exactly why reporting comes first here.
