Withholding periods (WHP) and Export Slaughter Intervals (ESI) are critical compliance requirements for Australian livestock producers. Getting them wrong can result in residue failures, market exclusion, and significant financial penalties.
What is a Withholding Period?
A WHP is the minimum period that must elapse between the last treatment of an animal with a chemical product and the time it can be slaughtered for human consumption. WHPs are set by the APVMA and listed on every registered veterinary and agricultural chemical label.
What is an ESI?
The Export Slaughter Interval (ESI) is a separate requirement for animals destined for export markets. ESIs are often longer than WHPs and must be observed to maintain access to export markets, particularly Japan, Korea, and the EU.
Key Rules to Follow
- Always read the label before treatment — the label is the law
- Record treatment dates, product used, batch numbers, and animal IDs in your chemical records
- Observe both the WHP and ESI — whichever is longer applies for export animals
- Calculate from the date of the last treatment, not the first
- Different withholding periods may apply for meat, milk, and eggs on the same product
