What is Buffalo Fly?
Buffalo fly is a blood-sucking insect about half the size of a house fly. Adult flies spend most of their life on the animal, feeding up to 40 times per day. Heavy infestations cause irritation, skin lesions, reduced feed intake, and significant production losses in both beef and dairy cattle.
When Does Buffalo Fly Season Start?
In Queensland, buffalo fly season typically runs from September through to May, peaking in the hotter, more humid months. Northern Queensland producers may deal with flies year-round. Fly numbers build rapidly when temperatures rise above 20°C and rainfall occurs.
Signs of Buffalo Fly Infestation
- Cattle bunching together or standing in shade and water
- Constant tail swishing and head shaking
- Dark lesions around the neck, withers, and belly
- Reduced weight gain and milk production
- Skin damage and secondary infections
Buffalo Fly Control Methods
Pour-on treatments are the most commonly used method in Australia. Products containing cyfluthrin (Cylence), deltamethrin (Butox), or flumethrin (Bayticol) are applied along the topline. Application frequency varies by product — always refer to the current product label for registered re-application intervals and withholding periods.
Ear tags impregnated with synthetic pyrethroids or organophosphates provide longer residual control. Rotate chemical classes each season to manage resistance.
