Soil Fertility, Forage Management & Seeding using Dyna-Dan

Below is a checklist to consider before choosing Dyna-Dan for your pasture:

Sorghum is best suited to fertile soils.
Conduct an independent soil test before sowing.
Ensure potassium levels are adequate in acidic soils.
Do not exceed 110kg/Ha of nitrogen.
Avoid grazing or cutting sorghum below 15cm plant height.
First grazing or cutting should be conducted at approximately 1 metre to increase plant productivity.
Be aware of the risk of prussic acid (HCN) poisoning with forage sorghums.
Risk is greatest when crops are <60cm high or are moisture stressed or frosted.
Cut or graze when 60–120cm high to maintain best quality.
Sow seeds shallow into adequately moistened soil.
Seeding rate for marginal dryland at 5–10 kg/Ha and for favourable dryland or irrigation, 10–20 kg/Ha.

Directions for Use Dyna-Dan Awaken Thiram is a treated forage sorghum seed. The Thiram seed treatment is pre-applied — refer to the registered product label for full chemical information, including any handling precautions and withholding periods. 1. Before sowing, conduct an independent soil test. Sorghum performs best on fertile soils with adequate potassium levels, particularly in acidic soils. Do not apply more than 110 kg/Ha of nitrogen. 2. Sow seed shallow into adequately moistened, well-prepared seedbeds. For marginal dryland conditions, sow at 5–10 kg/Ha. For favourable dryland or irrigated conditions, sow at 10–20 kg/Ha. 3. Do not graze or cut plants below 15 cm height at any time. 4. Aim to take your first graze or cut at around 1 metre height to get the best plant productivity and regrowth response. 5. For ongoing cuts or grazing, manage the crop between 60 cm and 120 cm height to maintain feed quality. Tips: Be aware of the risk of prussic acid (HCN) poisoning with forage sorghums. Risk is greatest when plants are under 60 cm high, moisture stressed, or frosted. Never graze or cut stressed or frosted crops until conditions have clearly passed and plants have recovered. If in doubt, contact your local agronomist before turning stock in.

Always read the current registered product label before use. Dose rates and withholding periods on this page are provided as a guide only. The registered label supplied with the product is the legal document and takes precedence. If in doubt, contact TGRM on (07) 5482 1692 or the manufacturer directly.

Treat seed shortly before planting to maximise protection during germination and early growth stages. Wear appropriate PPE including gloves and avoid inhalation of dust during application; ensure good ventilation when treating seed indoors.

Common Questions

What is Dyna-Dan Forage Sorghum used for?

Dyna-Dan is a hybrid forage sorghum suitable for grazing, hay and silage production. It has a high leaf to stem ratio, quick regrowth and high sugar content, making it generally suitable for multiple cuts.

What are the key characteristics of this variety?

Dyna-Dan is tolerant to cool temperatures for strong early growth, has quick recovery after cutting or grazing, abundant disease-free leaves, and high sugar content. These traits make it a quality forage option.

What soil conditions does Dyna-Dan prefer?

Sorghum is best suited to fertile soils. Before sowing, conduct an independent soil test and ensure potassium levels are adequate, especially in acidic soils.

What should I know about prussic acid (HCN) risk with this sorghum?

Forage sorghums carry a risk of prussic acid poisoning. Risk is greatest when crops are very young, moisture stressed or frosted. Always read the product label and consult your veterinarian or agronomist for specific management advice to minimise this risk on your property.

Where can I find more detailed information about seeding and management?
