Astro is a fine stemmed forage sorghum that is photoperiod sensitive, ensuring it is ultra-late flowering.

When planted after mid-October it will not become reproductive until mid-autumn, ensuring ease of management, particularly over large areas for sheep and cattle grazing or for hay production.

Whilst Astro is ultra-late flowering, it does not mean that grazing should be unnecessarily delayed.

It is still recommended to use the crop when it is around 900mm to 1100mm (About 3ft) tall.

Under favourable conditions this height should be reached in approximately six weeks after sowing, and these conditions also allow for rapid regrowth, which improves the potential for multiple grazings throughout the season.

Astro is a versatile all-rounder hybrid, ideally suited to either intensive or range grazing. It can also be used for green-chop or for making hay, round bale or pit silage.

Astro produces a large amount of DM and is easy to manage due to its ultra-late flowering.

Common Questions

What is Astro sorghum best used for?

Astro is a versatile forage sorghum suited to grazing (both intensive and range), green-chop, hay production, and silage (round bale or pit). It's ideal for sheep and cattle operations.

Why is Astro described as "ultra-late flowering"?

Astro is photoperiod sensitive, meaning it responds to day length. When planted after mid-October, it won't flower until mid-autumn. This makes it easier to manage, especially across large areas, and allows flexibility in when you graze or harvest.

Will Astro grow in dry conditions?

Astro is suited to both dryland and irrigated systems. It performs best in dryland conditions when there is good stored soil moisture at sowing time. Your planting rate will depend on your soil moisture and rainfall outlook—contact TGRM on (07) 5482 1692 or visit 55 Tozer St, Gympie for advice on which rate suits your situation.

What does the Thiram Filmcoat do?

The seed is coated with Thiram, a fungicide treatment. Always read the product label and safety data sheet for full details on the coating, its purpose, and any handling precautions before sowing.

Where can I find the label and safety information?

The product label and safety data sheet (SDS) are essential—they contain all information on handling, storage, and use. Ask TGRM staff for these documents, or contact (07) 5482 1692. Always read and follow the label before use.
