Target Pests

Orthene Xtra Insecticide (acephate) is registered for control of a broad range of sucking and chewing insects across various crops. Key target pests include aphids, thrips, whitefly, leafhoppers, mealybugs, plant bugs (including green vegetable bug), caterpillars (including helicoverpa/budworm), loopers, leaf miners, and various other soft-bodied insects. Its systemic activity makes it particularly effective against pests that feed within plant tissue or on the underside of leaves where direct spray contact may be difficult. Always check the registered label to confirm which specific pest and crop combinations are approved for use in your situation.

Orthene Xtra Insecticide contains acephate, a systemic organophosphate insecticide that is taken up by the plant and moved through its tissues to control sucking and chewing insects. It is primarily applied as a foliar spray, mixed with water and applied using conventional ground or aerial spraying equipment. Always calibrate your sprayer before use and ensure thorough, even coverage of target foliage for best results.

Mix the required amount of product in a partly filled spray tank, agitate well, then top up to the final volume. Maintain agitation throughout spraying to keep the solution uniform. Apply when target insects are present and at their most vulnerable stage — typically early instar nymphs or newly hatched larvae. Avoid application during the hottest part of the day to reduce the risk of plant stress and to minimise vapour drift.

Do not apply if rainfall is expected within a short period of application, as wash-off will significantly reduce efficacy. Avoid spraying in windy conditions to prevent drift onto non-target plants, waterways, or neighbouring properties. Always refer to the registered product label for specific application rates, timing, and critical use instructions relevant to your crop and pest combination.

This is a Schedule 6 poison — always wear the personal protective equipment specified on the label, including gloves, face shield, and appropriate clothing. Observe all withholding periods (WHP) and re-entry intervals stated on the label before allowing people or livestock back into treated areas.

Tips for Best Results

• Apply at first detection: Scout crops regularly and apply Orthene Xtra at the first sign of pest infestation, targeting early instar stages when insects are most susceptible and before populations build to damaging levels.
• Rotate chemical groups: Acephate is a Group 1B insecticide (organophosphate). To manage insecticide resistance, rotate with products from different mode-of-action groups across successive spray applications or seasons — this is especially important for pests like thrips and whitefly that are prone to developing resistance.
• Optimise spray coverage: Use adequate water volumes and appropriate nozzle types to achieve thorough coverage of all plant surfaces, including undersides of leaves where many target pests shelter. Poor coverage is one of the most common causes of reduced efficacy.
• Mind the heat and wind: In Queensland's warm conditions, spray early morning or late afternoon to reduce evaporation, minimise stress to the crop, and improve uptake. Avoid spraying in winds exceeding label guidelines to prevent off-target drift.
• Store safely and correctly: As a Schedule 6 poison, store Orthene Xtra in a locked, clearly labelled, cool and dry location away from children, livestock, feed, and water sources. Dispose of empty containers in accordance with label instructions and local regulations — triple rinse and puncture before placing in approved disposal.
