Target Pests

Acephate 970 provides control of a broad range of chewing and sucking insect pests across registered crops, including aphids, thrips, whitefly, leafhoppers, mirids (green vegetable bug and related species), loopers, armyworms, budworms, heliothis (Helicoverpa spp.), mites (suppression), mealybugs, scale insects, and various caterpillar species. It is widely used in cotton, vegetables, ornamentals, and other broadacre and horticultural crops. Acephate 970 is a soluble powder insecticide containing 970g/kg acephate, an organophosphate with both contact and systemic action. It is primarily applied as a foliar spray, mixing readily with water to form a clear to slightly cloudy solution. Always add the required amount of product to a partially filled spray tank and agitate thoroughly before topping up to the final volume. Maintain agitation during application to ensure an even mix.

Apply as a thorough, even cover spray to the target crop canopy, ensuring good coverage of both upper and lower leaf surfaces where pests tend to shelter and feed. Acephate works best when applied at first signs of pest activity before populations establish. The systemic properties mean it is taken up through plant tissue, providing residual protection even to newly emerged foliage after treatment.

Do not apply if rainfall is expected within a few hours of application, as this may wash the product off foliage before it is absorbed and reduce efficacy. Always check the product label for crop-specific application rates, withholding periods, and the number of applications permitted per season, as these vary by crop and pest. Do not apply through irrigation systems unless the label specifically permits it.

This is a Schedule 6 poison — wear full PPE including chemical-resistant gloves, face shield, and protective clothing when mixing and applying. Observe all re-entry intervals and withholding periods stated on the label before harvesting or allowing stock access to treated areas.

Tips for Best Results

• Spray early in the day: Apply in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler and insects are most active on foliage. Avoid application during the heat of the day to reduce evaporation and crop stress risk.
• Resistance management: Acephate is an organophosphate (Group 1B). Rotate with insecticides from different mode-of-action groups (e.g. Group 4A neonicotinoids or Group 28 diamides) to reduce the risk of resistance developing in pest populations — particularly important for aphids, thrips, and heliothis in Queensland.
• Thorough coverage is key: Because many target pests hide on the underside of leaves or in growing tips, use adequate water volumes and appropriate nozzle types to achieve full canopy penetration. Consider a flat fan or hollow cone nozzle for dense crops.
• Protect pollinators: Do not apply to crops in flower when bees are actively foraging. Apply in the late evening if bees are present in the area and avoid spray drift onto nearby flowering plants. Acephate is toxic to bees.
• Storage and safety: Store in a cool, dry, locked location away from feed, seed, and fertilisers, as required for a Schedule 6 poison. Keep in the original container with the lid tightly sealed.
