Wynn cassia (Chamaecrista rotundifolia cv. Wynn) is a tropical/subtropical pasture legume used mainly to improve native grazing pastures. It is a short-lived perennial in wetter areas and often behaves as an annual in drier areas, regenerating strongly from seed. It is particularly suited to light, free-draining sandy or sandy-loam soils and tolerates relatively low fertility. BBarenbrug+1

Seed and plant characteristics

• Small, light-brown seed produced in narrow pods.
• Strong natural seed production and self-regeneration.
• Plants are generally low and spreading when grown in open stands, but can become more upright in dense stands.
• Yellow flowers are produced during the growing season.
• Good drought tolerance once established.
• Does not tolerate waterlogging.

Rates vary with the seed product and establishment method:

• Alone: approximately 1–3 kg/ha.
• In a pasture mixture: approximately 0.5–1.5 kg/ha in conservative pasture recommendations, while some coated/oversowing products recommend 2–5 kg/ha.

Because Wynn cassia produces very large quantities of seed, lower rates can be preferable where good establishment conditions exist. Queensland guidance, for example, recommends a maximum of 0.5 kg/ha for some mixed pasture situations. FFutureBeef

The preferred planting period is spring to summer, when reliable rainfall is expected. Establishment

For best results:

• Sow into a well-prepared, weed-free seedbed where practical.
• It can also be broadcast after burning native pasture or planted into lightly disturbed/strip-prepared pasture.
• Do not sow deeply — about 10–20 mm maximum is recommended.
• Good soil moisture immediately after sowing is important for germination.
• Wynn seed can contain a high proportion of hard seed. Mechanical scarification or appropriate dry-heat treatment can improve germination; hot-water treatment is not recommended.
• Inoculation with an appropriate rhizobium (Group M/cowpea-type inoculant, depending on the seed/product recommendation) is recommended as insurance. DDepartment of Agriculture and Fisheries+1
