Woolly pod vetch(Vicia villosasubsp.dasycarpa) is a cool-season annual legume used mainly forgrazing, hay/silage, grain production and green manure. It establishes in autumn and produces most of its growth during winter and spring.
Seed description
Seed is generallydark brown to black, relatively large and oval/rounded.
Woolly pod vetch can have a proportion ofhard seed, so variety choice is important.
In Australia, varieties includeCapello, Haymaker Plus and Namoi.
Seed should beinoculated with the appropriate vetch/Group E rhizobiabefore sowing, particularly where vetch has not recently been grown.
Planting time
For Australian conditions, the recommended sowing time is generallyautumn. Early sowing is useful because it allows seedlings to establish before cold weather slows growth.
As a general guide:
Early to mid-autumn:preferred where soil moisture is adequate.
Avoid delaying sowing too far into winter, particularly in colder areas.
Sow when there isgood soil moistureand adequate conditions for establishment.
Recommended sowing rates
Current Australian guidance gives the following rates forwoolly pod vetch:
Purpose
Target plants/m²
Sowing rate
Grain
40–50
25–40 kg/ha
Hay / silage
50–60
30–45 kg/ha
Grazing
50–60
30–45 kg/ha
Green manure
60–70
45–50 kg/ha
For comparison, NSW DPIRD gives6–10 kg/ha when sown as the only speciesand4–6 kg/ha in mixturesfor its woolly pod vetch pasture recommendations.
Important:those much lower NSW rates are for particular pasture situations, so the appropriate rate depends heavily on whether you are growing it forgrain, forage, pasture or a cover crop.
