  1. Woolly pod vetch (Vicia villosa subsp. dasycarpa) is a cool-season annual legume used mainly for grazing, hay/silage, grain production and green manure. It establishes in autumn and produces most of its growth during winter and spring.

    Seed description

    • Seed is generally dark brown to black, relatively large and oval/rounded.
    • Woolly pod vetch can have a proportion of hard seed, so variety choice is important.
    • In Australia, varieties include Capello, Haymaker Plus and Namoi. 
    • Seed should be inoculated with the appropriate vetch/Group E rhizobia before sowing, particularly where vetch has not recently been grown. 

    Planting time

    For Australian conditions, the recommended sowing time is generally autumn. Early sowing is useful because it allows seedlings to establish before cold weather slows growth. 

    As a general guide:

    • Early to mid-autumn: preferred where soil moisture is adequate.
    • Avoid delaying sowing too far into winter, particularly in colder areas.
    • Sow when there is good soil moisture and adequate conditions for establishment.

    Current Australian guidance gives the following rates for woolly pod vetch:

    For comparison, NSW DPIRD gives 6–10 kg/ha when sown as the only species and 4–6 kg/ha in mixtures for its woolly pod vetch pasture recommendations. 

    Important: those much lower NSW rates are for particular pasture situations, so the appropriate rate depends heavily on whether you are growing it for grain, forage, pasture or a cover crop.
