Whittet Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum) is an improved, vigorous, warm-season kikuyu variety used for pasture, lawns, sports fields and erosion control. It spreads rapidly through stolons and rhizomes, is drought tolerant, responds strongly to nitrogen and can tolerate heavy grazing.
Planting rate
The appropriate rate depends on whether you are establishing a pasture or lawn:
- Pasture: generally 2–4 kg/ha for good establishment. Rates around 1–3 kg/ha are also recommended by some current seed suppliers, depending on conditions.
- Lawn/turf: approximately 0.5–1.0 kg per 100 m² for a new lawn. Some suppliers recommend up to 1.5 kg/100 m² where rapid establishment is desired.
- Oversowing an existing lawn: approximately 0.5 kg/100 m².
For pasture, the higher end of the rate is useful where weed competition is significant or seedbed preparation is less than ideal, because it helps achieve quicker ground cover.
Best planting time
Whittet Kikuyu needs warm soil and reliable moisture for successful germination.
- General best period: spring to early summer, or late summer to early autumn depending on the district.
- Late February to March as the best planting period in its region, with planting possible from October through April.
- Current guidance recommends sowing when soil temperatures are above about 20°C and several days of good soil moisture are expected.
- For lawns, Kikuyu is generally best sown when summer temperatures are around 25–35°C.
