VOLGA VETCH (COMMON-LEGUME) PER KG

Volga® (Barenbrug) is an early-maturing common vetch (Vicia sativa) developed in Australia. It is suited particularly to low- to medium-rainfall cropping areas, with good early establishment and high grain-production potential, and flowers at about 95-100 days after sowing.

Sowing rate

Barenbrug's current general recommendation for Volga is approximately 30-40 kg/ha. Sowing rate is related to end use and rainfall zone: higher rates are used for hay/silage, grazing and green manure, and lower rates for grain/seed production. Adjust for seed-production objectives, rainfall and end use - refer to Barenbrug's current sowing guide for rates by district, soil and season.

Best sowing time

Vetch is generally sown with the winter cropping program - broadly April-May in lower-rainfall/warmer areas, May-June in medium-rainfall areas and June-August in higher-rainfall/colder areas. Volga's early maturity gives it more flexibility in sowing date than later varieties.

Sowing depth and inoculation

Aim for good seed-to-soil contact with adequate moisture; refer to Barenbrug's guide for sowing depth by soil type. Where vetch, peas or faba beans have not previously been grown in the paddock, inoculate the seed with the appropriate (Group E) inoculant before sowing.
