Virbamec oral plus selenium for sheep is used for the treatment and control of abamectin sensitive strains of internal parasites including benzimidazole, levamisole, and morantel resistant strains, itch mite and nasal bot of sheep and as an aid in the control of selenium deficiency in sheep.

For concurrent use with a drench from a different chemical group.

Broad spectrum parasite control

Short acting

Contains Selenium

Why Choose Virbamec oral plus selenium:

Broad Spectrum Parasite Control:
Virbamec oral plus selenium contains abamectin a potent, short acting member of the macrocyclic lactone (ML) family of drenches.
Is highly effective against all major internal parasites that are susceptible to an ML drench, including gastrointestinal roundworms and large lungworm.
These worms reduce overall productivity, especially in young animals.
Weight gains can be reduced by up to 20% and wool growth can be affected significantly.
Virbamec oral plus selenium also controls itch mite and nasal bot. Abamectin has been consistently shown to be more potent than ivermectin, the other short acting ML used in sheep drenches.

Contains Selenium:
Selenium deficiencies can increase the effect a worm burden can have on animals through suppressing their immune systems.
Other problems associated with selenium deficiency are ill thrift infertility, reduced production (milk, wool and meat), scouring and ‘white muscle’ disease.

Dosage:
Virbamec oral plus selenium is given orally at the recommended dose rate of 1mL/4kg.
Shake well before use.

Tips for Best Results

  • Weigh animals accurately — never estimate liveweight. Underdosing is one of the leading drivers of drench resistance on Australian sheep properties.
  • ML resistance awareness: Macrocyclic Lactones (ML) including abamectin are an important drench class, but ML resistance in barber's pole worm (Haemonchus contortus) is increasingly detected across south-east Queensland. Use this product as part of a combination drench strategy — not as a sole-active drench — and conduct regular DrenchChecks (faecal egg count reduction tests) to monitor efficacy on your property.
  • Refugia management (WormBoss principle): Always leave a proportion of your low-risk animals (e.g. healthy adult ewes in good condition) undrenched where appropriate. Maintaining refugia — worms in the population that have not been exposed to drenches — is one of the most effective strategies to slow the development of drench resistance on your property.
  • Storage: Store below 30°C out of direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and animals. Check the expiry date before use.
  • Record keeping: Record the drench product used, date, mob treated, liveweights, and dose administered. Good records help you track resistance trends and make better drench decisions over time.

Common Questions

What parasites does Virbamec Oral Plus Selenium treat?

Virbamec Oral Plus Selenium is used to treat and control internal parasites including gastrointestinal roundworms, large lungworm, itch mite and nasal bot in sheep. It is effective against abamectin-sensitive strains, including those resistant to benzimidazole, levamisole, and morantel.

Why would I choose an abamectin-based drench?

Virbamec Oral Plus Selenium contains abamectin, a potent short-acting member of the macrocyclic lactone family. Abamectin has been shown to be more potent than ivermectin, the other short-acting ML used in sheep drenches. It provides broad-spectrum parasite control to help protect productivity, as parasite burdens can reduce weight gains and affect wool growth.

What role does the selenium play?

Virbamec Oral Plus Selenium includes selenium to help address selenium deficiency in sheep. Selenium deficiency can suppress immune function, worsening the effects of worm burdens, and is also linked to ill thrift, infertility, reduced production (milk, wool and meat), scouring and white muscle disease.

How do I use this product safely?

Always shake the bottle well before use. For specific dosing instructions, withholding periods, and safety directions, refer to the registered product label and any accompanying Safety Data Sheet. If you have questions about correct application, contact your veterinarian or agronomist, or call TGRM on (07) 5482 1692.

Can I use this as my only drench?

Virbamec Oral Plus Selenium is recommended for concurrent use with a drench from a different chemical group. This is an important part of parasite resistance management. Your vet or agronomist can advise on the best drenching strategy for your flock.
