Barbervax is the first effective vaccine to be developed to treat Barber’s Pole worm, the most significant roundworm parasite of sheep and goats in the world.
It provides farmers with a revolutionary tool to combat infestation.
Unlike with drenches, Barber’s Pole worms that are resistant to the vaccine are not expected to evolve because the vaccine works in a very different way.
Barbervax contains tiny amounts of protein purified from the lining of Barber’s Pole intestines.
Like all vaccines, it works by stimulating the natural immune response in the animal after injection. The antibodies produced circulate in the sheep’s blood, so that the parasites ingest them with their blood meal.
These antibodies then attach to the lining of the Barber’s Pole intestine, blocking digestion and starving the worm so that it produces far fewer eggs and dies.
Benefit:
This vaccine provides a major alternative to drench-based control and will help manage worms in the face of drench resistance.
Barbervax will be of particular benefit in barber’s pole-endemic regions where frequent drenching may be necessary to prevent sheep deaths.
The vaccine is given to sheep and lambs as a series of subcutaneous injections of 1 ml, at no more than 6-week intervals to cover the barber’s pole worm-risk season.
It is important to understand that the first two vaccinations are not able to provide protection, but they prime the lamb’s immune system so that protection occurs following the third vaccination, and lasts for up to 6 weeks.
Further vaccinations need to be given each 6 weeks while there is a barber’s pole worm risk or more frequently in those years and situations where animals are exposed to very heavy challenge from barber’s pole worm.
Once sheep have received a course of vaccine as lambs, a single booster injection in a subsequent season will typically provide 6 weeks protection without the need for a second priming dose.
Immunity to barber’s pole worm is not sustained, whether it is acquired by exposure to natural worm infections or from the Barbervax vaccine.
Barbervax immunity works in a different way from naturally acquired immunity and because it is not boosted by natural exposure, lasts for only 6 weeks after the sheep has been primed by a series of 3 vaccinations.
Other vaccines given to sheep also vary in their lengths of protection.

Barbervax is registered for use in sheep and lambs (and goats) for the prevention and control of Barber's pole worm (Haemonchus contortus), the most economically significant roundworm parasite of small ruminants in Australia. It is specifically designed for use in Barber's pole worm-endemic regions, including subtropical and tropical areas of Queensland and northern New South Wales where this parasite poses the greatest risk of stock loss.
Administration: Barbervax is given as a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection of 1 mL per animal. Inject into the loose skin of the neck or behind the shoulder using clean, sterile equipment. Each bottle contains enough vaccine for 100 doses (100 mL).
Vaccination schedule: The vaccine must be given as a series of injections at intervals of no more than 6 weeks throughout the Barber's pole worm risk season. The first two injections prime the immune system only — protection does not commence until after the third injection. Subsequent boosters every 6 weeks or less maintain protection for the duration of the risk period. Do not extend intervals beyond 6 weeks or protection will be lost and the priming schedule must restart.
Key precautions: Use within the stated shelf life. Keep refrigerated at 2–8°C and never freeze. Shake gently before use. Use a fresh needle for each animal where practical. Do not vaccinate animals that are severely ill or heavily parasitised without addressing the worm burden first. Always read the full product label and follow all directions prior to use.

Tips for Best Results
- Start your vaccination program early — begin Barbervax injections before the Barber's pole worm risk season kicks off (typically ahead of warm, wet conditions in Queensland). Protection only kicks in after the third dose, so timing is critical.
- Stick strictly to the 6-week interval — exceeding this interval breaks the immune response and leaves your animals unprotected. Set calendar reminders for each booster round.
- Barbervax is a genuine resistance management tool — unlike chemical drenches, Barber's pole worm cannot develop resistance to this vaccine because it targets the worm's digestive process in a completely different way. Use Barbervax as a cornerstone of your integrated worm management program to reduce drench pressure and slow the development of drench resistance on your property.
- Maintain refugia — WormBoss principles recommend always leaving a proportion of your mob untreated (refugia) to dilute resistant worm populations on pasture. Barbervax supports this strategy by reducing your reliance on broad-spectrum drenches, helping preserve the effectiveness of the drenches you do use.
- Cold chain is essential — store Barbervax in a refrigerator at 2–8°C at all times. Never freeze. Transport in an insulated cooler with ice bricks. Vaccine that has been frozen or exposed to heat will not work.
- Keep vaccination records — record the date of each injection, the batch number, and which animals were treated. This helps you track booster intervals accurately and supports any insurance or sale documentation.
