Mount the energiser in a dry location away from direct weather exposure, ideally under a shed or weatherproof box. Connect the positive and negative terminals to your fence wire and earth stake respectively, ensuring all connections are clean and tight. Switch on and check that the indicator light pulses regularly — if it doesn't, check your earth stake is driven at least 1 metre into moist ground and your connections aren't corroded. Tips: Keep vegetation trimmed back from your fence line; heavy grass and weeds touching the wire will drain power and reduce your effective range. Test your earth stake resistance regularly with a multimeter — a poor earth is the most common reason farmers think their energiser isn't working when it's actually fine. If you're running a long fence, check voltage at the far end with a voltmeter; if it's dropped below 2000V, you may need a more powerful unit or to run a second energiser.
