Drive the earth stake into the ground at least 900mm deep, or deeper if you hit rock or clay. Connect the earth clamp to the stake and run your earth wire from the energiser to the clamp, making sure the connection is tight and free of rust or corrosion. For best results in dry country, install multiple stakes spaced out and connect them together with earth wire to increase conductivity. Check all connections annually and replace any corroded clamps or wire. Tips: In Queensland's dry seasons, moisture around your earth stake makes a massive difference to how well it works — water the area around your stakes if you're in a drought and performance drops off. A good earth system is your best defence against lightning strikes during storm season, so don't cut corners on the number of stakes or the depth you drive them. Keep your earth clamp connections clean and tight; a loose or rusty connection will reduce effectiveness and leave you with a weak fence when you need it most.
