Position the splitting wedge on the end grain of the log along any natural cracks or grain lines. Strike the top of the wedge firmly with a sledgehammer to drive it into the wood and split the log. For larger rounds, start with a smaller axe to create a starting crack, then drive the splitting wedge in to complete the split. Multiple wedges can be used simultaneously on very large or knotty logs. Tips: Always wear safety glasses and steel-capped boots when splitting with a wedge — steel fragments and wood splinters can fly in any direction. Position yourself so you're never directly in line with the wedge in case the hammer glances off. Let the wedge do the work — don't strike at an angle or with the side of the hammer. For green or wet wood, splitting is much easier than dry seasoned wood.
