Drive the axe wedge into the eye of your axe handle using a hammer, tapping it firmly into the slot cut in the top of the handle. The steel wedge expands the wood, locking the head onto the handle. Check the head is completely secure before use by tapping the end of the handle on a hard surface — if the head moves at all, drive the wedge in further.
Tips: Axe handle wedges are a safety-critical component — a loose axe head is dangerous. Always inspect the head-handle connection before each session of use. If the handle swells or shrinks with seasonal moisture changes and the head becomes loose again, soak the head end of the handle in water overnight to swell the wood, then re-drive the wedge.
