Drive the staples straight through the barb wire into the timber post using a claw hammer or fencing tool, ensuring the barb wire sits firmly in the groove of the staple. Space staples about 150mm apart along each post to prevent wire movement and sagging. Don't hammer too hard or you'll bend the staple — firm, controlled strikes work best. Leave enough staple protruding so the wire can't slip out, but not so much that it creates a hazard. Tips: Galvanised staples last longer in wet Queensland conditions, but still check posts annually for rust spots where the coating's been damaged by hammering. Pre-drill holes in hardwood posts if you're struggling to drive staples — it saves time and reduces bent staples. Keep a few spare staples handy when you're out fixing fence; they're cheap and you'll always find one that's bent slightly from install.
