Drive the staples through the barbs at a slight angle into your timber posts, making sure they're seated firmly so the wire can't slip. Don't hammer them completely flush — leave just enough clearance so the wire sits properly in the barb without binding. Space them roughly 300-400mm apart along the post depending on your wire tension. Work your way along the fence line, checking that each staple is holding the wire securely before moving to the next post. Tips: Use a good quality fencing hammer with a smooth face to avoid bending the staples — a bent staple won't hold worth a damn. If you're working in hot weather, wet your timber posts slightly before driving staples; dry timber can split or cause the staple to glance off. Keep your wire at consistent tension as you staple; too tight and you'll stress the post, too loose and stock will push through.
