Silk is a vigorous, warm-season perennial forage sorghum suited to grazing and hay production in subtropical summer-rainfall districts. It offers good drought tolerance, a long growing season and typically persists for three to five years under suitable management. Best performance is generally achieved on fertile, heavier soils.
Supplied as uncoated bare seed and sold by the kilogram. Sow during spring or summer into a warm, moist, firm seedbed, approximately 2–5 cm deep. Published guidance suggests approximately 3–7 kg/ha for drilled single-species stands and 1–2 kg/ha when included in mixtures; adjust for seed quality, establishment method and local conditions. Important grazing note: Sorghums can accumulate prussic acid or nitrates during early growth, drought, frost or other stress. Avoid grazing immature or stressed plants and obtain local agronomic or veterinary advice before use. Silk may also spread beyond planted areas if seed production is not managed.
