Shirohie Millet is a fast-growing, high-yielding summer annual forage millet suited to grazing, hay and silage. It produces quick, leafy feed, establishes at lower soil temperatures than forage sorghum and does not contain prussic acid (HCN). Regrowth after grazing can be very good where moisture and nitrogen are adequate.
Plant into a fertile, fine, moist seedbed once soil temperature has stabilised at 14°C or above. Sow approximately 2–4cm deep. AGF's Shirohie growing guide recommends these planting rates:
- Lighter/poorer soils: around 12kg/ha
- Heavier, fertile soils: 20–25kg/ha
- Hay or silage production: 20–25kg/ha
For grazing, allow plants to become well anchored and reach around 20–30cm high before introducing stock. Under favourable conditions, first grazing can be around 6 weeks after sowing.
I've added it to the workbook on a dedicated New products sheet, including the final title, full description, planting rate, sowing depth, soil temperature, sale unit and research source.
