Mount the gate between two sturdy posts using the hinges and latch hardware, ensuring the posts are set at least 600mm into the ground and properly braced. Check that the gate hangs square and level before tightening all bolts fully—a gate that's slightly out of square will bind and wear unevenly. Install the latch so it engages smoothly without forcing, and test the swing a few times under load before letting sheep through. Tips: Paint or galvanise any cut ends immediately after installation to prevent rust starting at those spots, which will creep along the rail faster than you'd expect. Keep the hinges and latch lubricated with a light machine oil every couple of months, especially if the gate gets heavy use or sits near water troughs. Make sure your posts aren't shifting before blaming the gate for not closing properly—loose posts will make any gate perform poorly.
