L56 Lucerne (Medicago sativa) is a proven semi-winter-dormant lucerne (Dormancy 5) developed for grazing, hay and silage production. A versatile dual-purpose variety, L56 combines strong seedling vigour, high forage quality and good persistence, making it suitable for both dryland and irrigated production.

L56 has a low, broad crown and high grazing tolerance, allowing it to withstand regular grazing while maintaining stand persistence. It also has strong pest and disease resistance and good leaf retention during periods of stress. The Goldstrike XLR8® seed treatment assists establishment and protects young seedlings during the critical early growth stage.

Uses

  • Grazing – beef, dairy and sheep
  • Hay and silage production
  • Permanent and medium-term pasture
  • Dryland or irrigated production

Planting Time

Lucerne is generally best established during autumn or spring, when adequate soil moisture and suitable temperatures are available. In warmer/subtropical areas, early autumn through early winter can provide good establishment conditions. Avoid establishing into waterlogged soils or when young seedlings are likely to experience severe moisture stress.

Sowing Rate

  • Dryland: 4–10 kg/ha
  • High rainfall / irrigated: 18–25 kg/ha
  • Sowing depth: approximately 5–15 mm

For best establishment, sow into a firm, fine, weed-free seedbed with good seed-to-soil contact. Lucerne performs best on deep, well-drained soils and does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging.
