Clopyralid-based herbicides such as Salve are highly selective against broadleaf (dicotyledonous) weeds, with particular strength on species in the Asteraceae (daisy), Fabaceae (legume), and Polygonaceae families. Key target weeds include thistles (Nodding, Spear, Scotch, Winged, Slender), Paterson's Curse (Salvation Jane), capeweed, clovers (where weed control in grass pastures is required), dock, sorrel, bindweed, and various other broadleaf weeds common to pastures, cereals, and non-crop areas in Queensland and throughout Australia. Salve Herbicide contains 500g/L Clopyralid, a selective systemic herbicide from the pyridine carboxylic acid group. It is absorbed through foliage and roots and translocated throughout the plant, making it effective against broadleaf weeds. Apply as a foliar spray using ground equipment or aerial application where registered. Always calibrate your sprayer before use and ensure even coverage across the target area.
Mix the required amount of Salve in the spray tank with clean water, filling the tank to half volume before adding product, then topping up to the final volume with agitation. For best results, apply to actively growing weeds that are not under stress from drought, waterlogging, or frost. Application to young, actively growing weeds generally gives the best control outcomes. Refer to the product label for specific rate recommendations based on weed species and growth stage.
Do not apply if rainfall is expected within 1–2 hours of application, as this can wash the product off leaf surfaces before adequate absorption occurs. Avoid application during high winds to prevent spray drift onto susceptible broadleaf crops, pastures, or ornamental plants nearby. Clopyralid can persist in plant material and compost, so exercise caution with treated vegetation.

Tips for Best Results
- Apply to young, actively growing weeds: Clopyralid works best on weeds at the seedling to early rosette stage. Larger, mature weeds or those under moisture or heat stress will be harder to control and may require follow-up treatment.
- Allow a rain-free period: Ensure at least 1–2 hours of dry weather after application to allow adequate leaf absorption. In Queensland's subtropical climate, check weather forecasts carefully during the wet season.
- Protect susceptible broadleaf crops and plants: Clopyralid is highly active on many broadleaf species. Maintain adequate buffer distances from susceptible crops such as vegetables, legumes, sunflowers, and ornamentals. Be aware of spray drift risk on warm, gusty Queensland days.
- Resistance management: Rotate herbicide mode-of-action groups where possible and avoid repeated use of Group I (pyridine carboxylic acid) herbicides as the sole control measure. Integrate with cultural and mechanical control practices where practical.
- Compost and fodder caution: Clopyralid can persist in treated plant material. Avoid using hay, silage, or compost made from recently treated plants in vegetable gardens or sensitive cropping areas, as residues can cause damage to susceptible plants.
