Highworth Lablab (Lablab purpureus) is a fast-growing, warm-season annual forage legume suited to grazing, hay, silage and forage production. Highworth has an upright growth habit with purple flowers and black seed and matures earlier than Rongai. It performs well under warm conditions and has good tolerance to periods of heat and moisture stress.
Highworth can provide high-quality, palatable forage and can be grown as a pure stand or mixed with forage sorghum, millet or other compatible summer forage species.
Planting rate: 15–20 kg/ha under dryland conditions. Rates can be increased to approximately 30 kg/ha under irrigation or in high-rainfall conditions. When used in a forage mixture, the lablab rate can generally be reduced according to the proportion of lablab required.
Sowing depth: 4–6 cm into moist soil with good seed-to-soil contact.
Planting time: Sow once the risk of frost has passed and soil temperature is consistently around 18°C or higher. In Queensland, mid-October through early January is a useful general sowing window, with earlier sowings normally producing more forage.
