Fix the porcelain reel insulator to your corner or end strainer post at a change of direction — pass a bolt or a loop of heavy tie wire through the centre bore and secure it to the post so the reel is held firmly. Run your fence wire around the porcelain groove so it wraps the reel and carries the strain around the corner without the live wire touching the post. Make sure the wire seats in the groove and can't jump out under tension. Tips: Keep your insulators clean — dust and grime can create a leakage path that bleeds your charge into the ground, especially important in our coastal humidity. Check them regularly during fencing maintenance because once porcelain cracks or chips, it's compromised and needs replacing.
