Rongai Lablab variety

• Type: Warm-season forage legume; generally grown as an annual.
• Growth habit: Vigorous, leafy and spreading/creeping, with good biomass production.
• Flowers: White.
• Seed: Usually light brown/tan, with roughly 3,600–4,300 seeds/kg depending on seed lot.
• Maturity: Rongai is a late-flowering variety, giving it a relatively long production season compared with Highworth.
• Uses: Grazing, hay, silage/forage, cover crop, crop rotation and green manure.
• Advantages: Good drought tolerance once established, high forage production and ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen. It performs best on well-drained soils and does poorly under prolonged waterlogging.

Planting time

For warm/subtropical areas such as Queensland, plant when the soil is consistently around 18°C or warmer, with the usual planting window being mid-October to early January. Earlier planting generally gives more forage.

Seed rate

The 15–20 kg/ha rate is designed to establish roughly 40,000–60,000 plants/ha.

Planting depth: approximately 2–6 cm, into moist soil with good seed-to-soil contact.
