Position the 4700L tank on level, well-drained ground in a location with partial shade to minimise algae growth and water heating. Install a float valve to automatically maintain water levels and prevent overflow. Ensure adequate trough face space of at least 0.75m per cow in dairy operations to prevent competition and stress at drinking time. Connect to your rainwater system or water supply and allow the tank to fill before introducing livestock. Tips: In Queensland's hot summer months, water consumption can double or even triple—plan your tank capacity accordingly, as cattle may drink up to 100L per head daily in peak heat. Clean the trough monthly to remove algae buildup and disinfect periodically; poly troughs are easier to maintain than concrete and won't leach chemicals into drinking water. Position the tank to take advantage of natural shade from trees or structures, as cooler water encourages better intake and reduces algae proliferation.
