Position the 4000L tank on level, well-drained ground in a location that receives partial shade to minimise algae growth and water heating. Install a float valve at the inlet to prevent overflow and maintain consistent water levels. Ensure the trough is easily accessible to livestock and positioned to allow 0.75m of face space per cow in dairy operations. Connect water supply via appropriately sized plumbing and check all connections are secure before introducing livestock. Tips: Place the tank where it can be easily cleaned and monitored—regular monthly cleaning removes algae build-up, especially critical during Queensland's hot summer months when water consumption can double. In summer, prioritise shaded positioning as cattle drink up to 100L per day in heat, and water temperature directly impacts consumption and quality. Keep records of water levels and livestock behaviour to identify any issues early.
