Rye Corn is a winter-spring cereal that has the ability to withstand adverse weather conditions compared to other cereal crops.
It’s able to handle cold and limited waterlogging, most importantly it’s drought resistance and ability to withstand sand blast enables it to produce a soil-binding cover on land where other cereals won’t grow.
This ability to control soil erosion, provide rapid spring growth, suppression of weeds and providing forage or grain for harvest makes Rye Corn an attractive addition to a crop rotation.
Agronomic Information:
Sowing Rates 40-50kg/ha
Rainfall 350mm+
The stubble of rye breaks up more slowly than other cereals, ensuring soil cover for a longer period of time
Outperforms all other cover crops on infertile, sandy or acidic soil or on poorly prepared land
Weed and Pest Suppressor
Can tie up N in the soil, sow with legumes to offset this occurrence ie vetch
Good option for green manure.
Common Questions
What is Rye Corn and what's it used for?
Rye Corn is a winter-spring cereal crop. It's tough and can handle cold, limited waterlogging, drought, and sand blast — conditions that stress other cereals. It's useful for soil binding and erosion control, suppressing weeds, providing spring growth, and you can harvest it for forage or grain. It's also a good option for green manure and a solid addition to crop rotation.
What kind of soil and rainfall does Rye Corn suit?
Rye Corn outperforms other cover crops on infertile, sandy or acidic soil, and on poorly prepared land. It needs rainfall of 350mm or more.
What's the sowing rate?
The sowing rate is 40–50 kg/ha.
Should I sow anything else with Rye Corn?
Rye Corn can tie up nitrogen in the soil. If that's a concern, sow it with legumes like vetch to offset this.
What happens to the stubble after harvest?
The stubble breaks down more slowly than other cereals, which means it keeps the soil covered for longer — that's good for erosion control.
