Sow Red Caloona cowpea between October and December into warm, moist soil at 30-50mm depth, using 15-25 kg/ha drilled or broadcast. Ensure the soil is inoculated with Cowpea group (Group CB) Rhizobium before sowing to maximise nitrogen fixation and plant establishment. This summer annual legume grows rapidly in SE Queensland conditions from October through March, delivering high forage yields suitable for grazing or hay production. Tips: Red Caloona cowpea is particularly well-suited to Queensland coastal areas and performs well even in more acidic soils where other legumes may struggle. One of the easiest summer legumes to establish, it offers excellent value in ley farming rotations and presents a lower bloat risk than lablab when grazed.
