Green panic (Megathyrsus maximus var. trichoglume cv. Sowing: drill or broadcast into a firm, well-prepared seedbed at situation-specific rates — as a guide (Barenbrug) 3–6 kg/ha on marginal dryland, 10–12 kg/ha on good dryland and 12–15 kg/ha under irrigation. Small seed — sow no deeper than 1 cm; rolling after sowing improves establishment. Sow mid-spring, or late summer to early autumn, into moisture. Note: if your seed is supplied coated (e.g. AgriCOTE or equivalent), coated-seed rates on the bag label take precedence, as coating changes seeds-per-kg. Situation: best suited to fertile soils; responds strongly to improved fertility and to nitrogen. Sensitive to frost; tolerates shade; combines well with suitable legumes for your district. Establishment and grazing: graze only lightly in the establishment year. Green panic does not tolerate sustained heavy grazing — manage with rotational grazing and allow recovery after grazing or dry spells. Seed note: fresh panic seed can be dormant; germination improves with age — test or check germination information for your lot before sowing. Stock note: pastures dominated by panic species can cause photosensitisation, and high-oxalate panic pastures are associated with 'big head' in horses — seek advice before grazing horses on panic-dominant pasture.
