Sow Torpedo ryegrass between April and May in the Gympie region at 20-25 kg/ha, incorporating 60-100 kg/ha of MAP or DAP starter fertiliser to establish phosphorus and nitrogen. Sow into prepared seedbed or directly into run-down summer pastures. First grazing is safe when the anchor test passes — gently pull a plant at grazing height; if it remains firmly in the ground, livestock can graze. Implement rotational grazing by spelling paddocks after reaching 2.5-3 leaf stage to allow carbohydrate recharge before the next rotation. Tips: Torpedo is a high-yielding tetraploid Italian ryegrass ideally suited to SE Queensland winters and spring. It establishes quickly and can persist into a second year under good conditions. Sow ryegrass alone rather than mixing with other modern ryegrass varieties, as Italian ryegrass is highly competitive. Use this variety to fill critical winter feed gaps in tropical pasture systems.
