PER BAG FORAGE SORGHUM LUSH 20KG BAG HSR SEED NUSEED (EQ: ASTRO) at a glance

When quick and plentiful feed is needed, Lush lends itself to intensive grazing and is reliable and proven across all summer forage areas of Australia.

Lush is one of the most popular forage sorghums in Australia. It is a fine stemmed, leafy, highly productive, quick forage, that responds to intensive management.

Features:

Sorghum x sudan grass
Lower prussic acid levels
Fine stemmed, especially at higher planting rates
Very leafy forage with excellent leaf to stem ratio
Suits intensive grazing and high stocking rates
Ideal for early grazing
Makes excellent hay due to high leaf ratio and regrowth ability

Suggested sowing rates:

Marginal dryland: 3 – 5 kg/ha
Good dryland: 8 – 10 kg/ha
Irrigated: 15 – 25 kg/ha

Sow Lush forage sorghum from October to January once soil temperature is consistently above 18°C (ideally 20–25°C) into good soil moisture, at a depth of 20–40 mm. Use the sowing rate that suits your situation: marginal dryland 3–5 kg/ha, good dryland 8–10 kg/ha, and irrigated 15–25 kg/ha. Allow the crop to reach about 60–80 cm tall before the first grazing and never graze short, young or frost/drought-stressed regrowth, as young sorghum can contain dangerous levels of prussic acid (hydrocyanic acid/HCN) that can rapidly poison livestock. Rotationally graze through summer and autumn until the first frost. Tips: The main animal-health risks with forage sorghum are prussic acid (HCN) and nitrate poisoning — not bloat. Do not graze for at least 7 days after a frost or heavy drought stress, and wait until regrowth is well established and above about 45 cm before re-grazing. Introduce hungry stock gradually onto fresh growth and ensure they have access to other roughage and adequate water. Prussic acid and nitrate levels are highest in young, rapidly growing or stressed plants and in the lower stem. The treated seed (Thiram filmcoat) protects against seedling disease and aids establishment. Disclaimer: The information provided above is a general guide only, drawn from recognised Australian references (Business Queensland/DAF, FutureBeef and the seed supplier). Pasture and crop performance and animal-health risk vary with soil type, rainfall, nitrogen status, stock class and management. Tom Grady Rural Merchandise recommends confirming grazing-safe heights and withholding periods with your agronomist or veterinarian before grazing.
