Genfarm Paraquat 250EC is a non-selective contact herbicide used for the rapid control of a wide range of grasses and broadleaf weeds. It is commonly used for knockdown weed control in fallows, fence lines, firebreaks, industrial areas, and non-crop situations. The product works by rapidly desiccating green plant tissue on contact.
Active Constituent:
Paraquat 250 g/L present as paraquat dichloride.
Formulation:
Soluble liquid (SL).
Mode of Action:
Paraquat is a fast-acting contact herbicide that disrupts plant cell membranes, causing rapid desiccation of green plant tissue. It does not translocate within the plant and only affects the sprayed areas.
Uses / Applications:
• Knockdown control of grasses and broadleaf weeds
• Pre-plant and fallow weed control
• Fence lines, firebreaks, and non-crop areas
• Industrial and commercial weed management
Directions for Use:
Use according to label directions. Apply evenly to actively growing weeds. Avoid spray drift onto desirable plants. Refer to the product label for specific rates, water volumes, and application methods.
Compatibility:
Can be used with certain herbicides and additives as permitted on the label. Always check compatibility before mixing.
Safety Information:
• Highly toxic if swallowed.
• Causes severe skin and eye irritation.
• Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing.
• Do not inhale spray mist.
• Wear protective clothing, gloves, and eye protection when handling.
• Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly after use.
• Keep locked away from children, animals, food, and feed.
Environmental Precautions:
• Do not contaminate waterways or drains.
• Do not apply near water used for drinking or livestock.
• Prevent spray drift and runoff.
First Aid:
• If swallowed: Seek urgent medical attention immediately.
• If in eyes: Rinse with clean water for several minutes.
• If on skin: Wash thoroughly with soap and water.
• If inhaled: Move to fresh air and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.

Aid to Cultivation:
- Annual grass and broadleaf weeds
- Wild Oats (at 2-5 leaf stage)
Selective Weed Control in Clover Pastures:
- Annual grass weeds
- Some broadleaf weeds including Paterson's Curse, Sorrel, Dock, Shepherd's Purse and some thistles
- Yorkshire Fog Grass
Note: DO NOT APPLY TO MEDICS. Exception: Paterson's Curse, Sorrel, Dock, Shepherd's Purse and some thistles will not be controlled at lower rates (600 mL-1.2 L/ha).
Kikuyu/Paspalum Pasture: To suppress growth for overseeding winter seed.
Lucerne:
- Annual grass weeds
- Some broadleaf weeds
- Barley Grass (common species H. leporinum)
Warning: In certain areas, an uncommon species of Barley Grass (H. glaucum) resistant to Paraquat based products has become established. It may regrow after initial scorch.
Perennial Grass Seed Crops: Annual grass and some broadleaf weeds in Cocksfoot and Perennial Ryegrass.
Application Instructions
Key Restraints:
- DO NOT add wetter unless spraying at high volume
- Where mixed at less than 400 mL/100L water, add 100 mL Wetter 1000 per 100L spray
- DO NOT spray plants which are waterlogged, under stress, or covered with soil or dust
- DO NOT spray plants covered with heavy dew (rain following spraying will not affect results)
- DO NOT sow or cultivate for 1 hour after spraying but operations should commence within 7 days
- Ground application only – do not use through aircraft, misting machines or hand-held CDA units
General Application Rates
Aid to Cultivation:
- Annual grass and broadleaf weeds: 1.2-1.6 L/ha
- Winter/spring/early summer sowing: 1.6-2.4 L/ha
- Wild Oats (2-5 leaf stage, autumn/winter): 600-800 mL/ha (Qld, Vic, SA, Tas, NT, WA); 600 mL/ha (NSW, ACT)
Where cultivation follows spraying, it may commence one hour after spraying but should be completed within 7 days. Use higher rates for dense, more mature weed stands. Wild Oats must have at least two leaves.
Rice:
- Pre-sowing: 1.6 L/ha
- Post-sowing, pre-crop emergence: 800 mL/ha
Wild Oat Control in Spring Fallows: 1.2-2 L/ha (Qld, NSW, NT, ACT). Use higher rate for summer growth. Avoid spraying under hot, dry conditions. Best results obtained when spraying in late evening.
Always read the current registered product label before use. Dose rates and withholding periods on this page are provided as a guide only. The registered label supplied with the product is the legal document and takes precedence. If in doubt, contact TGRM on (07) 5482 1692 or the manufacturer directly.
Application Tips
Timing and Conditions:
- Best results when spraying Wild Oats in spring fallows in late evening
- Avoid spraying under hot, dry conditions
- Where heavy weed growth is present, better seedbed results if cultivation is delayed 3-5 days
- Wild Oats must have at least two leaves before spraying
Pasture Management:
- Remains of old pasture should be reduced by continuous heavy grazing
- Remove stock 3-5 days before spraying to allow pasture to freshen up
- For clover pastures: Graze continuously after seasonal break to height of 2-4 cm, then remove stock 2-3 days before spraying
- DO NOT apply to clover until it has reached 6-leaf stage
- DO NOT spray clovers affected by insect attack, disease or moisture stress
- DO NOT use on clover pastures in water repellent sands or situations subject to moisture stress
Lucerne:
- DO NOT spray stands under 12 months old
- If Mintweed is present, use Genfarm Atragen 900 Herbicide at 600 g/ha instead
- If resistant Barley Grass (H. glaucum) suspected, use Genfarm Fluazifop for grass weed control
Yorkshire Fog Grass: Apply spray volumes of 100-250 L/ha (higher volume for dense or tall, ungrazed pastures). Add Wetter 1000 at 120 mL/100L. Apply in early spring for best results.
Always read the label and follow directions for use. The registered label is the legal document governing use of this product.
