MEGAMIN EXTRA MAGNESIUM 20KG AGSOLUTIONS MMLSMAGCB20 at a glance

MegaMin Extra Magnesium supplement is formulated to provide extra magnesium for stock grazing lush green pastures and winter cereals.

The combination of extra magnesium in addition to broad spectrum macro and trace minerals provides essential nutrients that can often be lacking in lush green pastures and forages.

Magnesium, macro and trace minerals are essential for sheep and cattle grazing lush green pastures, winter cereals and on soils low in magnesium.

Magnesium deficiency can suppress appetite and reduce feed intake.
In severe cases, grass tetany can cause death of sheep and cattle grazing lush green, low fibre forages.

Magnesium supplements can be quite bitter and for that reason we have a highly palatable Extra Magnesium Sweet blend available for those situations where intake is challenging.

Why Magnesium is important:

Magnesium is absorbed in the rumen and is the second most limiting mineral for stock grazing lush green pastures and winter forage.
Lush green fodder passes too quickly through the rumen to allow adequate absorption of Magnesium, which can lead to Grass Tetany.
Plant uptake of Magnesium may also be reduced in the cooler months, increasing the need for supplementation.
Magnesium stored in the body is not rapidly available, so animals are reliant on daily intake, particularly during high-risk periods.
Magnesium may aid in reducing stress, during weaning, sales, shows and transport and assist with meat quality.
Lack of Magnesium can significantly reduce milk production.
Because mature fodder has a higher Magnesium level in the stem, it is recommended to give animals access to roughage and legume hay during high-risk periods for grass tetany.
Assists with calving and lambing

Grass Tetany:

Caused by low blood Magnesium levels, Grass Tetany (hypomagnesaemia) may occur throughout the year on both tropical and temperate pastures.
Symptoms include restlessness, staggers, over-alertness or even aggressiveness.
In severe cases, livestock can die suddenly, so prevention is important.

Provide Megamin Extra Magnesium loose supplement in a feeder or trough with free-choice access for cattle or sheep. Position feeders in well-trafficked areas away from water troughs. Monitor consumption and replenish as needed, particularly through the green season transition when magnesium demand peaks. Tips: Particularly important at the start of the green season to reduce grass tetany risk as cattle transition to lush, growing pasture. Ensure all animals have equal access to feeders by positioning multiple stations in larger paddocks.

Common Questions

What is MegaMin Extra Magnesium used for?

MegaMin Extra Magnesium is a supplement for stock grazing lush green pastures and winter cereals. It provides extra magnesium along with a broad spectrum of macro and trace minerals to help prevent deficiencies that are common in lush green pastures and soils low in magnesium. It's especially important for preventing grass tetany in sheep and cattle.

Why is magnesium important for my livestock?

Magnesium is the second most limiting mineral for stock grazing lush green pastures and winter forage. Lush green feed passes through the rumen too quickly for animals to absorb enough magnesium, and the body doesn't store magnesium readily, so daily intake is essential. Magnesium deficiency can suppress appetite, reduce feed intake, and in severe cases cause grass tetany, which can be fatal. Adequate magnesium also helps with milk production, calving and lambing, and may reduce stress during weaning, sales, shows and transport.

What is grass tetany and why should I prevent it?

Grass tetany (hypomagnesaemia) is caused by low blood magnesium levels and can occur throughout the year on both tropical and temperate pastures. Symptoms include restlessness, staggers, over-alertness or aggressiveness. In severe cases, livestock can die suddenly, so prevention through magnesium supplementation is important.

What else should I feed alongside MegaMin Extra Magnesium during high-risk periods?

During high-risk periods for grass tetany, it's recommended to give animals access to roughage and legume hay in addition to the magnesium supplement. Mature fodder has higher magnesium levels in the stem and provides the fibre needed to slow feed passage through the rumen and improve magnesium absorption.
