Drive the earth stakes supplied into moist soil to a depth of at least 1 metre — deeper is better if you can manage it. Connect the earth clamp to your fence line, then run the cable down to the earth stakes and secure with the clamp provided. If you're in dry country, space multiple stakes out and connect them together to improve earth conductivity. Test your earth resistance with a meter once installed — you want it as low as you can get it. Tips: Don't skimp on stake depth or number — a poor earth won't protect your gear or stock when lightning hits, so it's worth doing properly the first time. If your soil's clay-based and dries hard, consider installing stakes in autumn or winter when the ground's easier to work and naturally more conductive. Keep your earth system separate from house and shed earthing — mixing them can cause problems.
