Kohnke's Own Troppo-Salts is a concentrated electrolyte and salt supplement for horses living, working or travelling in hot, humid and tropical conditions. It is particularly suited to northern Australia, including Queensland, the Northern Territory and northern Western Australia.

What is Troppo-Salts designed to do?

Horses lose significant amounts of sodium, potassium, chloride and other electrolytes through sweat. In hot and humid weather, this can be particularly important because horses may sweat heavily for prolonged periods.

Troppo-Salts provides a concentrated combination of:

• Sodium
• Potassium
• Magnesium
• Chloride
• Vitamin E
• Vitamin C
• Glucose
• Organic chelated zinc
• L-arginine

The formula has a higher potassium-to-sodium ratio than Kohnke's Own Cell-Salts, reflecting the greater potassium losses that can occur with heavy sweating in hot, humid conditions.

Support for sweating and hot-weather horses

Troppo-Salts is specifically formulated for horses that need additional electrolyte support in tropical conditions. The added vitamin E, vitamin C, zinc and L-arginine provide nutritional support for normal sweating and help address oxidative stress associated with heat and hard exercise.

It can be particularly useful for horses:

• Living in hot, humid climates
• Working and sweating heavily
• Competing or travelling in hot weather
• That have increased electrolyte requirements
• Showing reduced or patchy sweating
• At risk of anhidrosis/anhydrosis ("dry coat" or non-sweating syndrome)

Kohnke's Own specifically identifies Troppo-Salts as suitable for horses with reduced sweating ability and horses working under tropical conditions.

Why the potassium is important

Sweat contains electrolytes, and potassium is particularly important for muscle and nerve function. Troppo-Salts therefore provides a higher proportion of potassium than the standard Cell-Salts formula.

This makes Troppo-Salts particularly appropriate where horses are sweating heavily in hot and humid weather.

Palatability and formulation

Troppo-Salts is a vanilla-flavoured, heavy, low-dust powder designed to mix readily into the horse's normal feed.

The salts are specially coated to improve palatability and reduce the strong salt reaction that can sometimes cause horses to reject electrolyte products. The coating also helps protect the added vitamins within the concentrated salt formulation.

Feeding rates

Kohnke's Own currently recommends the following general guide:

One level scoop provides approximately 25 g. For moderate and heavy workloads, the daily amount can be divided between morning and evening feeds. Kohnke's Own also recommends feeding after extended exercise to encourage rehydration.

Fresh, clean drinking water must always be available. Electrolyte supplementation does not replace access to water.
