Kohnke's Own TRIM™ is a specialised weight-management and metabolic support supplement for overweight horses, ponies and “good-doers” (easy keepers). It is designed to provide specific nutrients that may be inadequate when a horse is placed on a restricted, low-calorie or low-GI diet.

What TRIM is designed to do

TRIM is formulated to help normalise sugar and fat metabolism and support horses that have difficulty losing excess weight. It is particularly aimed at horses that develop:

• A cresty or bulging neck
• Fat deposits around the tail head
• Abnormal fat deposits around the shoulders and withers
• Excess body condition despite restricted feeding
• Weight-management difficulties associated with being an easy keeper
• Horses that need to be kept lean because of their risk of laminitis/founder

It can also be useful for hardworking horses that are sugar-sensitive but still require a grain-based diet for performance.

Key nutrients

TRIM supplies selected vitamins and minerals at specific levels to support normal metabolic processes, including:

• Magnesium — supports metabolic function and glucose utilisation.
• Organic chromium — involved in glucose metabolism and insulin response.
• Choline — has a role in fat metabolism.
• Manganese — contributes to normal metabolic processes, including fat metabolism.
• Vitamin C — provides antioxidant support and contributes to the body's natural production of carnitine, which is involved in fat metabolism.
• Other selected vitamins and trace nutrients supporting glucose and fat metabolism.

Importantly, TRIM is not intended to simply suppress hindgut fermentation or act as an artificial digestive buffer. Kohnke’s Own describes it as providing specific nutrients involved in normal metabolism.

TRIM is particularly suited to:

TRIM may be used as part of a controlled feeding program when the horse needs to reduce excess condition before competition.

How it is fed

Kohnke’s Own currently recommends:

Initial 10–14 days

• Horses: 30 g morning + 30 g evening = 60 g/day
• Galloways: 20 g morning + 20 g evening = 40 g/day
• Miniatures & ponies: 10 g morning + 10 g evening = 20 g/day

Normal/maintenance

• Horses: 20 g/day
• Galloways: 15 g/day
• Miniatures & ponies: 10 g/day

One level scoop is approximately 20 g. The dose should be adjusted as the horse loses weight, with long-term supplementation possible at the maintenance rate.
