Tox-Target is a high-potency, broad-spectrum mycotoxin binder specifically formulated for horses. It is intended to help horses exposed to toxins produced by moulds in pasture, hay, grain and prepared feeds.

What are mycotoxins?

Mycotoxins are naturally occurring toxins produced by moulds. In horses, problems can occur when contaminated grass, hay, grain or feed is consumed.

Kohnke’s Own particularly identifies risks associated with:

• Black paspalum — associated with ergot mycotoxins
• Ryegrass
• Clover
• Tall fescue
• Capeweed and other weeds
• Pastures exposed to hot, humid, wet or damp conditions
• Feed or hay contaminated with mould/mycotoxins

Importantly, feed does not necessarily have to visibly look mouldy to contain mycotoxins.

What Tox-Target does

Tox-Target contains five different mycotoxin-binding agents, combining mineral, organic and inorganic binders. The aim is to bind a broad range of mycotoxins in the digestive tract so they can pass out in the manure rather than being absorbed.

It also contains nutrients intended to support the horse's natural detoxification processes, including ingredients supporting liver function, kidneys, digestion and immune function. These include amino acids, choline, prebiotics and other functional nutrients.

Horses that may benefit

Kohnke’s Own specifically recommends Tox-Target for horses:

• Showing possible signs of mycotoxicosis
• Grazing high-risk pasture
• Grazing ryegrass, black paspalum, clover or tall fescue
• Exposed to pasture after periods of heavy rain or flooding
• Eating potentially contaminated hay, grain or feed
• Experiencing suspected grass-related problems
• With long-term exposure where additional liver-supporting nutrients may be useful

Possible signs associated with mycotoxin exposure can include unexplained spooky behaviour, skin irritation, photosensitivity, head shaking/flicking, staggers, gut problems, poor growth, reduced fertility, immune problems and poor stamina.

Feeding rate

For a 400–600 kg horse:

Kohnke's recommends splitting the daily amount between morning and evening feeds, particularly for horses grazing pasture continuously. One scoop is approximately 60 g.

For ponies and donkeys, the manufacturer's recommendation is to use half the horse rate.
