KOHNKES OWN PALOMINO GOLD 4 KG
Kohnke's Own Palomino Gold is a specialised calcium, trace-mineral and vitamin supplement formulated for Palomino horses and ponies, particularly those being prepared for the show ring. It is also suitable for Buckskins, Duns, Cremellos, Champagnes and other dilute-coloured horses.
What Palomino Gold is designed to do
The main purpose of Palomino Gold is to support rich, even coat colour, coat condition, shine and overall nutritional health, while helping minimise the risk of “smutting”—the development of black hairs or dark, patchy areas that can occur in some Palomino, Buckskin and Dun horses.
It is particularly useful where a horse is being fed a “white feed” diet, which is commonly used by owners trying to minimise ingredients such as molasses and excess dietary components that may contribute to unwanted coat-colour variation.
Key nutritional features
Palomino Gold provides:
- Calcium and bone minerals, including additional magnesium.
- A balanced range of essential trace minerals in both organic chelated and inorganic forms.
- A comprehensive range of vitamins and vitamin co-factors.
- Additional vitamins E, C and B1.
- Organic selenium as selenomethionine.
- Chromium.
- Nutrients designed to help cover potential deficiencies associated with cereal-based white-feed diets.
The supplement uses separate cold-pressed Supplet® pellets, designed to keep compatible nutrients together and help maintain their stability and potency. The pelleted format also reduces dust, sift-out and wastage and mixes readily into wet or dry feed.
Coat colour and “smutting”
Palomino Gold is not a colour dye or artificial coat-colouring product. Its approach is nutritional: it supplies a carefully balanced combination of vitamins and minerals intended to support good health and coat condition while reducing the nutritional risk factors associated with uneven colour and smutting.
Kohnke’s Own notes that individual horses can respond differently and does not guarantee that smutting will never occur. Genetics also play an important role in whether an individual Palomino develops black hairs.
Does it add energy or fizz?
Palomino Gold is designed as a concentrated nutritional supplement rather than an energy feed. It does not add extra sugar or significant additional energy and is intended to be suitable for horses where avoiding unnecessary dietary energy is desirable.
Recommended daily feeding rates
According to the current Kohnke’s Own guidelines:
Horse |
Daily amount |
|---|---|
Adult horse at rest |
20 g |
Light work / occasional showing |
30 g |
Moderately worked show horse |
40 g |
Pony/miniature at rest or light work |
15 g |
Pony/miniature in moderate work/showing |
20 g |
For moderately worked show horses, the 40 g/day rate is used in conjunction with a white-feed diet. Growing Palominos and young horses have different nutritional requirements, so Kohnke’s Own recommends obtaining specific feeding guidance for weanlings, yearlings and horses up to two years old.
The current double-ended scoop holds approximately 40 g at the large end and 15 g at the small end when level.
