Kohnke’s Own Cell-Salts — Full Description

Kohnke's Own Cell-Salts is a concentrated, feed-based electrolyte and physiological salt supplement for horses. It is designed to replace important salts lost through sweating and to correct dietary shortfalls, helping maintain hydration, muscle function, endurance and recovery.

Cell-Salts supplies four major electrolytes:

• Sodium — important for fluid balance, nerve function and normal muscle activity.
• Chloride — works with sodium to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance.
• Potassium — particularly important because significant amounts can be lost in sweat; it supports muscle and nerve function.
• Magnesium — contributes to normal muscle and nerve function.
• Glucose — included in a relatively low amount to assist electrolyte and sweat replacement. Kohnke’s Own states that the amount supplied is very small relative to normal pasture intake.

Why horses need electrolytes

When a horse exercises and sweats, it loses water as well as electrolytes. The losses can become substantial during prolonged work, hot weather, competition and travelling.

Cell-Salts is intended to help replenish these losses and encourage the horse to drink, supporting rehydration following exercise. Kohnke’s Own particularly recommends feeding it after extended exercise.

Special formulation

One of the features of Cell-Salts is its special coating technology. The salts are coated to reduce their reactivity with other nutrients in the feed and to improve palatability. The potassium is formulated for slower uptake, while the coating also helps reduce dust and improve acceptance.

It is vanilla flavoured and supplied as a concentrated, low-dust powder, making it easy to mix into either wet or dry feed.

Feeding guide

According to the current Kohnke’s Own Australian directions, one level scoop is 25 g:

For moderate and heavy work, the daily amount can be divided between the morning and evening feeds. Ponies and miniature horses are fed half these amounts.

Fresh, clean drinking water should always be available when feeding Cell-Salts.

When is it most useful?

Cell-Salts is particularly suited to horses:

• In regular work and training
• That sweat during exercise
• Competing or travelling
• Working in warm conditions
• Requiring additional dietary electrolytes
• That need electrolyte replacement following exercise
• On diets where sodium, potassium, chloride or magnesium intake may be inadequate.
