KATAMBORA RHODES GRASS SEED PER KG RVD

Katambora Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) is a warm-season, subtropical perennial pasture grass used mainly for grazing, hay production and erosion control. It establishes quickly, produces good-quality forage and is reasonably drought and salt tolerant. It performs particularly well where there is adequate summer moisture.

 Planting / sowing rates

Rates vary with whether the seed is coated or bare, seed quality, soil preparation and expected establishment. DLF, for example, recommends 8–12 kg/ha for a pure pasture and 3–5 kg/ha in a pasture mixture.

For a well-prepared paddock, a practical target is often around 6–10 kg/ha, with the rate increased where seedbed preparation or establishment conditions are less favourable.

 Katambora is a summer-growing grass, so it should be planted when the soil is warming and there is reliable moisture.

• Best: early spring, once soil temperatures are about 16°C and rising.
• In many subtropical areas, this means approximately September–November.
• Where summer rainfall occurs later, planting can extend into January–February/March, provided there is sufficient soil moisture.
• Avoid sowing into cold, drying soil because establishment can be poor.

Katambora seed is very small and light. Prepare a fine, firm seedbed and sow the seed on or very close to the soil surface. Do not bury it deeply—recommendations generally specify no deeper than 1–2 cm, followed by rolling to provide good seed-to-soil contact. Seed can germinate in approximately 1–7 days under suitable conditions.
